Welcome, Ruby (without worms). I don't visit terribly often, but do you know the String Asylum?

No, I'm not a complete idiot. I'm only a halfwit. In fact I'm actually a catfish.

Welcome, Ruby, from another fan of Russian music!

There's lots of Glazunov out there, and so little of it played Sad  He seems to be known mostly for his Trombone Concerto, which isn't really his best work anyhow.

Glazunov, Reiner? I always thought it was Rimsky-Korsakov (agreed that it's not a strong work though).

I think The Seasons is a splendid place to start, Ruby. There's a very good recording with Neeme Järvi and the Scottish National Orchestra, coupled with a lovely performance of the Violin Concerto available here. On the other hand, but still with the SNO (but now with a 'Royal' prefix) there's José Serebrier’s account which comes with a performance of his 5th Symphony (one of his very best).

Hi - thanks for the welcome.  Gosh no, I've never come across that before!  This is all looking rather dangerous for my free time, but that link is going straight into my favourites - thanks!  Smiley

Thanks Il Grande Inquisitor (love the name!).  I'm slightly worried about having joined this board as I've now got a shopping list of at least 4 items and I've only been here a couple of hours.  I might need to get a weekend job...  Grin

Oh dilemma... violin concerto or "very best" symphony.... ouch...

There are plenty of us here who know that feeling, Ruby. <resigned and fatalistic but with a glint in the eye smiley>

I'd almost cured myself of CDjunkiedom before joining the message boards, Ruby: since joining it all went into overdrive again for while, although it's calming down now. Honest.

You mean there isn't a <resigned and fatalistic but with a glint in the eye> smiley available?

<disappointed yet with understanding smilie>.

I'll take your word for it.  Grin

Fortunately I've just realised that my birthday is coming up.  Now, how to subtly get lists to the appropriate people...

Even were such a smiley to be available, not all of us would be using it this week, since there is a self-imposed 'manage without smilies for a week' session underway at the moment for some of us, Ruby. <   >

Oh right.  Noted.  Serious face.

I used to loathe them until I started frequenting message boards - they creep into your typing habits by osmosis don't they?

Fortunately I've just realised that my birthday is coming up.

If you want to see a slice of cake on your profile page on your birthday, you need to put your date of birth in your profile.  In my case the day and month are accurate, but the year is adjusted.

That's good to know - otherwise your typing and musical knowledge would be extremely advanced for your age.

IGI, you may not have seen the Signature Tunes thread, but I am convinced the Dance of the Cornflowers, or something from Autumn, from The Seasons was a BBC theme tune to something, but I can't remember what.  Would you know?
