I've never been struck by that Ollie, though I have a feeling you've just opened up the possibility of a new thread....

(Though in the Decca recording I always hear

"...Popular feeling's rising.
Balstrode I'd like you to come...."

as

"...Popular feeling's rising.
That's good: I'd like you to come...."

Which puts a slightly different (and more sinister) gloss on it all.....)
