Oh well. I've scraped together some little bits of my French and written a letter to the label for them to ignore. But at least I'm doing something about it.

Ollie, have you tried playing it on your PC, using, say, WinAmp? It would be interesting to see whether it is a general problem or maybe a clash with your player. You might even try ripping a couple of tracks and see how they turn out.
Found Margaret Leng Tan's DVD of Cage's Sonatas and Interludes, etc. at a sensible price the other day. It arrived yesterday morning. I will put it on tonight and report back.

Bryn, I tried it on two players but haven't tried it on my PC yet. Might try it on the PC tomorrow - one needs projects to do on a Sunday in Germany! (Yes I'm back in Basel on Monday. I came home for the weekend.)
Tommo - cheers! No beer for me alas - none in the house. Maybe something sleep-inducing later on though.

Shocking planning Ol, Schoolboy error. Anyway, I'm now onto Kathryn Harvey - Berg 7 Early Songs with Radio Zurich Orchestra and Walter Goehr (and a beer). Tommo

Right, Tommo, that settles it. Off to the kiosk for a cleansing reeb. You've driven me to it.

You see, the reason there's no beer in the house (or there wasn't until a few seconds ago) is that the kiosk is a particularly pathetic throw of a stone away...

Ollie, I am really enjoying this Leng Tan DVD. Not just the Sonatas and Interludes (such a different approach and sound to any I have heard before) but the documentary films and these Chess Pieces I am watching/listening to at the moment. Typical mid 1940s Cage. Amazon UK are doing it for £12, (a little more than I paid via Caiman, but that source seems to have dried up for the moment). Contrary to what the Amazon site claims, it is not Region 1, but Region 0. It is, however, NTSC, but most modern DVD players and televisions will handle it without problem. Highly recommended. Margaret Leng Tan going through Cage's original box of preparations is fascinating. For the piano works you get a choice of 96/24 PCM stereo, or DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 surround. Each of the Sonatas and Interludes is accompaied by the first few staves of the relevant piece on screen.

Ollie, I have just got to the Second Interlude. I love the way the recording was done. It's very much a performance, you even get to hear what sounds like either a cricket or cicada in the background during this Interlude, and not just once or twice. Then there's Ms. Leng Tan's sharp intakes of breath. Not your standard boring studio recording. Yes, yes, yes. A personal recommendation.
