(Oh dear, it was very tricky in Warsaw to hear people saying jak się masz and dziękuję and keep a straight face (me, not them, they did it perfectly well). Naughty Borat. Naughty, naughty.)

Jan-Pieter Belder has been gradually putting out the complete sonatas for Brilliant Classics (a rare case of them commissioning new recordings), including the trio sonatas. Without being able to comment on the correctness etc. factors, I do find it pretty impressive and varied.

Brilliant Classics do indeed put out a reasonable number of new recordings. Not that surprising since not that many labels will pay anything for a master tape nowadays anyway so if you have a CD made up and ready to give away why not go for a company which has some distribution?...
Now spinning here: the 1956 mono Vingt Regards on Adès, newly arrived from across the pond.
Yes!

That's not the same as ' commissioning new recordings', though, is it? Quite the opposite, indeed.

From here: "8th-24th/February/2007 Conductor and producer Nicol Matt records almost any Beethoven folk song in studio 1. With these songs, a lot of first recordings, the complete works of label brilliant classics are made up. Nicol Matt has assembled three young ensembles, that rotate during the two weeks of recording. Thanks to the great environment, technically and personal, the five albums are recorded in shortest time. The responsible sound engineers are Adrian von Ripka, Gerd Puchelt and Philipp Heck." That looks pretty much like a case of BrilliantClassics commissioning recordings to me.

From Belder's website:
In 1999 Belder was invited to cooperate in two important CD recording projects: 10 CDs in a complete Bach recording (Brilliant), and a CD in an Edison awarded complete recording of all the Keyboard works of the Dutch composer Jan Pieterszn. Sweelinck (NM classics) In 2001 he recorded several CD’s in a complete Mozart recording (Brilliant), including the KV 107 harpsichord concertos and a CD with variations for pianoforte. Currently Belder is working on a CD project (36 CD’s), recording all the harpsichord sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, a project which will occupy him until 2007, a memorial year of this great Italian/Spanish composer (1685-1757).

While we're talking about DS, can I (admittedly not the first time) take the opportunity to recommend this book? (Not cheap, I know. CUP prices, I'm afraid. If I knew where to get it cheaper I'd let you know, although it does seem to be a good £20 cheaper than last time I looked from Amazon themselves ...)
