Anyone else seen the published piano reduction? [...] (not by the composer but I've forgotten by whom) Stephen Pruslin, maybe? I haven't seen it, though.

RVW: Symphony No 4
But a chap can fantasize ...
I think you'd enjoy this, George! Good Lord!! <thud> Well I never . Now on order. Thanks, IGI. Ah, but an American orchestra could obviously never understand RVW's Englishness. What has Cleveland ever had in common with Dorking? [An rnsr is not reqid.] I'd better be careful about what I wish next. Boulez conducts the New York Philhamonic in 'The Essential Ronald Binge' anyone? Here's an interesting new Boulez disc to be released in October: http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//4780316.htm

Now that really is enticing, IGI. I can hardly wait. Mozart's Symphonies of Wind Instruments?

Good Lord!! <thud> Well I never . Now on order. Thanks, IGI. On a somewhat more serious note, it's a shame that Sony have never issued Boulez's Beethoven Opus 67 (LSO) on CD. I hope I still have a playable CBS LP of that in the loft. One can only second that. (Both of your sentences. ) His Handel I can probably wait a little longer for. Isn't there some CPE Bach? Or did I dream that? He did apparently conduct some Perotin once upon a time. I wonder if that will ever turn up somewhere... Well, that should teach me not to believe what I read as the result of Google searches. My memory said New Philharmonia, but my search results said LSO. I should have trusted my memory. Anyway, I have just searched through the couple of thousand LPs in the loft without success. Disconsolate, I came down the ladder and, with no real hope of success, checked through the stack I had waiting for transfer to HD. That's right, about half a dozen LPs back, there is was. It is now spinning, both from LP and onto HD. It is not Beethoven as I would hope to hear it too often. Still, I am and glad to have found it. One feature, thought to be unique at the time of the recording, is the repeat of the scherzo and trio. Not exactly a rare occurrence these days, eh?

Now spinning chez hh: Seonkyung Kim plays Intermezzi by Kunsu Shim and Johannes Brahms.
It's a bit surreal... Brahms sounds rather strange in this context. Rather dreamy and beardless.

I see Hyperion are bringing out a box of the complete Brahms chamber music. I have several of them already, of which the Clarinet Sonatas are particularly wonderful.

I have a feeling that I'm going to be extremely fussy about a recording of the Brahms' sonatas. I don't own one (when I used to play on a regular basis, I always preferred to play them rather than listen to them... ) but I'm going to have to buy one at some point soon. I have a feeling that it will either be a long task to select one, or I'm going to be forced to buy tons of them. I think that they are really rather lovely pieces if you hadn't guessed already. 'Are you happy with your mouthpiece?' Stupid question to ask a clarinettist really.

I got to know the Brahms sonatas through the Thea King recordings, as well as attempting to play them! One of my teachers was taught by Thea King at Guildhall and it was fun trying to get to grips with the Eb sonata. Another favourite recording is on BIS, with Martin Fröst and Ronald Pöntinen, which also includes the Trio

I'm a viola sonatas kind of guy myself (casts furtive glance behind sofa to see if the mallards have left enough space). I'm not much of a Brahms fan as you all know, but I would think that Hyperion box would be quite recommendable for those who are. I have the two CDs of trios already, which I've enjoyed, though I think my favourite piece of chamber music by Brahms is the G major string quintet with the first sextet running it a close second.

I don't think I've ever knowingly heard them in their viola incarnation...

'Are you happy with your mouthpiece?'
Incidentally, mine's made from crystal. I love the focused sound it makes. A bit of a shame that my clarinet needs a major overhaul as does my technique.

Oh my God. This isn't spinning per se because I've just now ordered it, but who's heard this? (Er, it's Peres/Ensemble Organum's recording of the Machaut Mass.) I don't think a 30-second MP3 sample has ever literally taken my breath away before. I almost ordered expedited shipping.

Everyone except you, Evan. Or at least they should have. Yes. Essential listening. Absolutely remarkable. Breathtaking.
