Milly,
Please don't think I am criticising you. I wasn't for a moment suggesting that your posts were a form of therapy. I always thought you, Jan, and George were wonderfully supportive of each other on that thread. I hope you can continue your support in some form somewhere.......
And I would still love to help if anyone feels they need my support too.
I am intrigued what has happened to the thread though - John?

I am not afraid of depressing things anymore. I found that in America people are afraid even to talk about anything mildly depressing. Depression is part of life and should not be pushed under the carpet.
I agree t-p, being able to talk to friends/family can be very helpful. But it can be dangerous to reveal too much about yourself on an open forum such as this. Not everyone reading it is necessarily a friend. I prepared something to write on that thread but had second thoughts about posting it, so didn't.

When I applied for a job not all that long ago I was asked on an application form whether I had ever suffered from depression. Well I never have, at least not in a medical sense that requires treatment. But it made me wonder. Suppose I did get badly depressed and needed help. I might hesitate for fear of being labelled unstable or unsuitable for employment for years to come. Then again, some people can be off work for a long time with depression and employers just want someone who can do the job.

Yes, it is wise thought. I know in general it is not wise to reveal too much about yourself. In fact the least the better, in my experience. However, I don't expect to meet any people here in real life. If any of you will meet me, don't tell me you know me and I will not tell you I know you. But it is hardly unlikely that I meet you people. It does feel good though to get things out of your system and see reaction of other people.
I did not find therapy that useful for myself. I went twice while in America. I think that perhaps their therapies are geared toward different culture. The shock of immigration probably required different approach. Some people here go to AA chat groups. I never had any problems with alcochol and my family too. I don't like to seat in a circle and tell people (who live in the same city) my problems. I can express myself better if I don't see other people. And they in AA they don't reply. You just say your problems and that is, there is no support. Plus people there have no clue what a musician goes through. I myself was never clinically depressed, but then who knows. May be I just was going with it without knowing.

Alcohol has resonances in the USA that it doesn't have here, what with Prohibition. There are people over there who regard themselves as alcoholics and go to AA meetings who would not be considered in the same category in the UK. Consider a programme like Friends, where they meet in a coffee bar. If that programme were made here they would meet in a pub, but the Americans are more squeamish about that.

I'm sorry the Depression thread has gone (anyone know why?), but perhaps it was a bit tempting to reveal too much simply because we are anonymous here.
My rant today is LINEN. As soon as summer clothes start appearing, so many of them are made of linen, which looks very nice before it's worn, but after about ten minutes looks like a squashed rag. I do not want to spend half my life ironing, and especially not in summer.

Tony, having spent a number of years in the States, I know what you mean. I wonder if it's 'worse' now than it was when they were making hit series after series of 'Cheers!', which was indeed set in a pub/bar (1980s). I can't actually think of a British sitcom which is. Plenty of soaps which feature pubs heavily, of course...

Can we reinstate depression room with some other name? I liked it, though it was scary in there some times.
I have a big rant today. I am running all day. Started at 10 at exam and had to play with no rehearsal (not even one). Student said he rather play with no piano and there is no piano part. I went home. They they called me to come again please. I went back, but the other pianist accompanied them. I stayed there another half an hour before my flute student came for her exam. I played with a flute student, went home. After I went back at 2.45. The student is visually impared. She did grade 2, but at least I saw her yesterday for rehearsal. While I was there there was grade 1 with no accompanist. I played with her. Now I am home. I had no heart to ask parents of visually impared girl for money and the other girl grade 2 also it was too easy for me. I had a whole day of running back and front just for the love of it. I just have to say no, because I don't have as much energy. I am so sorry people I bother you with my grumping. Can one learn how to say no?
Mary chambers, I don't think it is possible to look good in linen in summer. I say in Italy men have very nice looking suits made out of linen and they crease. However, I could see they are well made.

Yes t-p, if you go to the Coffee Bar, click NEW TOPIC and off you go. Depression Room is OK for a title but you could change it later

Oh poo poo plop!
Paddington station is chaos because of a fire at Burnham. So I can't get home - and this on a night when I have a trio rehearsal. What's more, I have to fend my way through all these people with their ridiculous wheelir bags trailing behind them. Whoever invented those things should be shot for crimes against living in a crowded society.
Maybe I should Judy go back to the office? (so that should show you just how bad it is.....)

Just don't get very upset. First of all you probably had enough rehearsals. It always feels like one more rehearsals will really make the difference. You will be all listening to each other even better. Secondly, may be you will think of something and make it. The most important thing is to keep in good humour and don't get upset.
