So why is martle grumping around, rather than enjoying a curry in the comfort of the East Croydon emporium with Ian and the crowd? I'll tell you why. I've been burgled. That's why. I dash back before getting the train to join the happy throng, only to find the garage doors open, one of them off its hinges. I have an ancient mews house, and the garage doors are wooden, barn-like affairs, and pretty insecure. Forced entry, and the connecting door inside was unlocked. They didn't take much - not the crap hi-fi, nor the crap computer. They didn't find the iPod! But I'm insulted. Am I not worth robbing?? Patently not. Anyway, I've had to deal with police and carpenter friend (who's made the place temporarily secure, at least). So I got a takeaway curry in sympathy.

Oh no! What did they take then? Sounds like an opportunist looking for spare cash if they left your electrical stuff.
That is horrendous. I'd need more than a takeaway curry to cheer me up after that.

martle, it's the ready-to-hand carpenter friend that impressed me most. You're so straight!

Bad luck martle - it's really horrible when that happens, whatever is or isn't taken. I think Milly's right about it being opportunist - as so many of these incidents are - but it's hard to get inside the mind of the sort of person who would do it. And they clearly have no sense of what it feels like to be violated in this way.

Thanks all. Yes, I'm ok. Philosophical, naturally. They just took a few small things as far as I can work out now - a bit of money lying around, a couple of inexpensive objets d'art. Quite frankly, I'm more bothered by the, er, bother. Tinners, what IS it with you and carpenters?? I have a (female) friend who is a complete gonner when it comes to guys in UPS uniforms.

Martle, I wish the swines `orrible `aemorrhoids that can only be removed with a crowbar. Without anaesthetic Although I guess now that they`ve seen you aren`t worth turning over ... they won`t. Once you`ve stopped feeling insulted, you`ll probably feel relieved! However I feel that it`s time you enrolled the moggy in SAS Techniques for Cats. Just in case ..... It`s a horrible feeling to be burgled. It`s happened to me once and that feeling of someone having walked around your space, peering and poking into your world, is horrible. It really is a violation. I send you a cyber hug and some extra poppadoms

Martle, so sorry about the burglary... miserable I know ( but at least they didn't take the ipod!)
I did wonder when I saw that you had been posting, either it was an unsociable evening and you had come home early or.....
Hope to meet up at the next one... hopefully a bit easier to get to !!!

martle, very sorry to hear that.
When a similar thing happened here, they walked off with a brand new tv and dvd, but managed to leave £250 behind which was sitting in an envelope in full view on a table!
I must say I found it all very unreal. And annoying. And the rest.
commiserations

In cases like this I have some sympathy for the concept of removing the criminal's hand. Bar steward. As Mort so accurately says, it's the sense of violation which really rankles.
But it goes without saying, of course, that I have much more sympathy for you, martle...
Cheers from Big Ron.

Thanks again, all! How nice of you. It's not nearly as bad as it could have been, I suppose. And thanks, Ian - I hope the evening was ok. Really sorry to have missed it.
