Actually, it's surprisingly short. But so was the life of the universe at the end of the story. So in relative terms, it might be rather long.

We had ours on Tuesday but I couldn't go this time. It was "My Name is Red" - Orhan Pamuk. Our next one is 5th September - "A Spot of Bother" - Mark Haddon.

Well, we'll just have to wait and see If everyone's computers start closing themselves down and there's news of panic as the Japanese Stock Market switches itself off, it's probably my fault. Oh Lordy, the markets are starting to go into meltdown. I really am terribly sorry.

I'd go into hiding, right now, George. And you'll need an alias. How about 'Mickey Queen'?

Jan, I have been spending the past week in the endlessly entertaining and inventive company of a gastric bug. Oh what larks we have had ! Anyway, it`s buglered off now, so I`m back. If I were you I`d hang onto my £4.16 and study the financial pages closely for the appearance of the Garnett Index. The FT will go `phut` and GEORGE GARNETT WILL BECOME MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE ! I may then consider investing the £2.4s.6d that I have stored in a sock underneath my mattress

Good to have you back, Mort . I wouldn't put money on my infallibility quite yet if I were you. Thanks to Fabuleux Millie not doing quite what I asked her to do in the 4.45 at Lingfield, the wad under my mattress isn't as lumpy as it was earlier today (Not to worry, Alison. The adrenaline thrill as she romped in a commendable third, bless her little fetlocks! Worth every penny )
