hh, I left BT five years ago in utter exasperation at their paltry and expensive level of service. I moved to onetel who have been absolutely fine until they were taken over by Talktalk. Things have deteriorated ever since and what I have been told today is completely unacceptable.

What are Telewest Broadband like? I've always had a fond idea that they're quite good but I'm not sure what my basis for that is, since I don't use them myself (I've a feeling I tried to sign up, and it turned out they hadn't yet reached my corner of SE London). I did use * to have a phone contract with them, back in the pre-internet days when I lived in a student flatshare in Holloway. *I seem to have found myself in the appropriate room for the following grump: I've never managed to work out what should be the emphatic form of 'used' as in 'used to'. I say 'did use to', but when I write it it looks horrible.

I started with AOL but found it too restrictive. Went on to Freeserve and had lots of problems. Changed to BT Internet - still have problems, but nothing major. Basically I feel there are problems with all of them. I've probably had fewer problems with AOL than anyone else I suppose - but I wouldn't go back.
To conclude Mort, they're all about the same I'd say so you might as well stay put. They take it in turns to crash for whatever reason.

I am with AOL simply because it came with the computer. I hate it.
On a previous pc I was with nascr.net which was great. Just did the job, and no gumph.

Freeserve and had lots of problems. You too then Milly - they were ok but once they were taken over by Orange, they became totally hopeless (and that's me being polite)

Absolutely, Jonathan. I changed to BT broadband then (after spending a fortune trying to solve the Orange problems), and so far it has been OK.

As no-one has mentioned it...
we have tiscali, who have on the whole been very good - we have no problems with the service / billing. we did have a slight problem when we moved house but they quickly refunded us for all the time we were without broadband. in comparisson they seem to be quite good value for money too.

Tiscali may be all right if your problem is on their script. However, we had the problem that they had some put a tag on our line to indicate taht they were supplying broadband services on it. We did not have broadband at that time, and had not had it since we moved into this house in May last year (they put the tag on after this). When we finally decided we were going to switch to broadband in March/April time we contacted them. Took them a while to understand teh problem, sicne we weren't a customer of theirs, finally got them to understand that, and sent a copy of our BT bill to prove the line was ours, and not the person they had registered on it. No response, a second copy sent via registered delivery, still nothing, third copy (also registered), still nothing. Departments not talking to each other, not ringing back when they said they would, a telecoms company where apparently they can't receive attachements to emails, and no-one has anyway of receiving faxes, and they can't even put you through to the departments which might actually be able to help. Eventually it took a complaint to the industry association to wake them up, and the tag was finally removed in July. Went to BT and it's been fine so far, although there does seem to be an issue with the Broadband Talk package we recevied at the same time (it's not picking up incoming calls properly).

*I seem to have found myself in the appropriate room for the following grump: I've never managed to work out what should be the emphatic form of 'used' as in 'used to'. I say 'did use to', but when I write it it looks horrible. I concur on two counts and empathise in a caring sort of way on the third. I reckon 'I did use to have...' is grammatically correct. And I agree it looks horrible when written. And I've never managed to work out an appropriate form either so I share your pain. My solution is to give up, reverse out carefully and take the bypass, "I did once have..." (er, if it was indeed only once). What I really came in to say was: SOME UNPRINCIPLED BUGGER HAS REMOVED MY LITTLE WOLF. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND I WILL SPEND THE REST OF MY LIFE IF NECESSARY HUNTING YOU DOWN AND BRINGING YOU TO JUSTICE. Now I've got to work out all over again what the hell photobucket is, how you use it, what you do when you've managed that... It took me three days last time. Grrrr.

GIVE GEORGE BACK HIS WOLF!!!! George, tell me wolfie's name again and I'll get him back for you in a jiffy. If anybody takes my Alfie off, I'll send him round after not having fed him for a couple of days!!!!
