They're having an auction between 16th and 18th December of all the memorabilia which I'd have loved to have gone to and perhaps bought a small memento.  I've had an invitation but can't go as I shall be in Lapland at the time because I'm going to see Santa. I'll miss out unfortunately unless I send a representative.  I shall have to mull that one over...... Undecided
I'm hoping that you're sending a representative to the auction, not to Lapland. I suspect that Santa will accept no substitute.

Maybe you should put them into your piece, hh.

- Tristan!
- Isolde!

Please be warned that I'm probably going to ruin a great operatic moment for you forever by saying what I'm about to say.  However:

I'm afraid that moment (I assume you're referring to Tristan's entrance in Act 2, in which case you've got the names in the wrong order Wink), during which the lovers are generally standing at opposite sides of a very large stage and singing really loudly, never fails to remind me of Monty Python's Semaphore version of "Wuthering Heights".

Oh Cathy!
Oh Heathcliff!

Oh, oh, Cathy!
Oh, oh, Heathcliff!

Ohhhh, don`t even get me started on BT, hh! It was because of their incompetence and arrogant attitude that I switched to Onetel. The good news is that they will refund or give you credit if they screw up. I got 6 months free line rental when I first moved here because it took them 3 weeks to connect me. There was an existing socket here at the time. Then when they failed to tell me that there would a call out charge for repairing a socket they had to waive the charge. I still think they are a carp organisation Angry Angry Keep a very beady eye on them!

Also my favourite hotel in which I've always stayed for years and  years, because it's central, is closing till 2009!!!!!! for refurbishment.   They're having an auction between 16th and 18th December of all the memorabilia which I'd have loved to have gone to and perhaps bought a small memento.

I'm happy to go and bid for a little something on your behalf, Mills. I'll choose something I'm sure you'll like.

No internet all afternoon, it's just come back  Angry I'm with Tiscali, not BT! That's the second time they've been down for a long period recently, although before that the service had been pretty good.

I'm off out soon to hear a recital by Andreas Haefliger of
Beethoven Sonata in D, op. 28 (‘Pastoral’)
Beethoven Sonata in F minor, op. 57 (‘Appassionata’)
Schubert Sonata in B flat, D. 960

One of the more poignant exchanges was as follows:

her    If I'm such a nasty lying slut, then why do you keep following me around?
him    SILENCE

Hmm. That's one of those questions you only think of a devastatingly clever answer to the following day.

Mort,

Re the theft of your wheelie bin - is this a common occurance where you live or is there someone who wishes to rummage through your rubbish for some nefarious purpose??

I think chaining it to something has to be the answer.

I assume you're referring to Tristan's entrance in Act 2
I was actually thinking of the slow rapturous bit over the return of the Prelude material near the end of Act I, where the names are in the order I had them, but ... erm (goes off to check recording) ... you're quite right, there is a bit in Act II where they call each other's names across the stage, and which since it's a bit more agitated and fast-moving may seem more suited to the dramatic purpose I had in mind.

I was also thinking of hh's propensity for alluding to that particular opera in his own music, as well as to an admittedly not very original dramatic scenario I've had in mind myself for a few years which allegorises the sort of modern-day couple you find in a lot of contemporary TV drama, resentful towards society and the state and perhaps living off benefits and with uncertain prospects, as a sort of Tristan and Isolde, wanting above all to retreat from the 'daylight' world of social obligation and responsibility into a night-time solipsistic world of their own desires.

Phew. I don't normally tell people about these ideas I have. We can get back to dustbins if you like. Wink

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

It was only a one-time thing (I think - unless you know something I don't)...

Oh George would you?  I'd dearly love to have Kaspar!  Sadly I think he would be silly money and most of the beautiful deco things will go to Americans I should think.  I might manage a small vase if you would be so kind..... Smiley

Milly,

You can leave a commission bid.  All the estimates will be in the catalogue, just double what they say and take a chance!

I'm seriously considering it - but I think we're talking billionaire-territory +.  Americans love British historical memorabilia.  I bet most of it goes overseas.  Cry
