Housework - I think both extremes have a mental problem of some sort. I agree with Milly that the people on "How Clean is Your House" are extraordinary, and I'm sure most of them have a big problem. I wouldn't believe they were real, except I know someone a bit like them - a highly intelligent, very musical (but fat!) woman, who didn't do anything about her house until she found a rat in the kitchen . Yuck! I don't think I have mental disorder about cleaning. I just like a clean house. I'm only totally OTT with my bedding as I've said on here before. Clean sheets and pillowcases every night. Just a little luxury of mine. I do have a "lady wot does" who comes once a week and takes 4 hours going through the house. Beyond that, I just keep kitchen surfaces/floor and bathrooms clean and hoover and polish if anyone is coming to visit. As to finding a rat - well not yet but there was the sad case of the mouse the other week.

Ah, Jan, it was you! Thank you so much, and Happy New Year The reason I am visiting the GOR room this afternoon is that I have just been listening to Act 3 of Siegfried from the Bayreuth Ring on R3, and Brunnhilde belted the final triumphant note of the opera a full SEMITONE flat. Yowch.

My conversation in Costa on platform 1 of Padders this afternoon, a couple of minutes before my train was due to leave....
"Hello. A primo capuccino to go, please." "Drink in or take away?" "Er, take away." "Large or Medium?" "No, Primo. It's what you call small." She called over her shoulder - "Small Mocha to go". "No! I said Capuccino, not Mocha."
I only just got my train.
Sheesh!

That's exactly what I mean Tommo when I say I must learn to be tolerant. I get really exasperated with stuff like that. I can be quite rude unfortunately. I assume you didn't say something to the effect of "Oi thicko - left your brain at home?" Not that I would of course.

I was of course the model of politeness.... However, next time they look busy, I may just ask "Please could I have a plate of Haddock and Chips sent up to my room?" and see what happens. Tommo

I need a new washing machine.
That in itself is a grump....BUT!!!!
I went into Currys today -(chosen due to their kind offer to take the old one & the packaging & recycle it)- but there was such a bewildering array of the bliddy things, all sorts of buttons, features, colours, prices, I just came out with my brain spinning at 1600 rpm.
How does one go about this sort of thing?
My soon-to-be-ex-husband did come in useful for this type of situation. He was so obsessive that I'd just get him going and about 3 weeks later he would emerge from the Which? magazine pile & brochures to tell me what I should buy...
HELP!
x Jan x
ps at least the chap in Currys was helpful - that's a first. Sorry to hear of your troubles Tommo !

Look on the internet first, and eliminate anything too complicated. Who actually uses 35 programmes? Or you could try the Which recommendations. I think you have to subscribe to their site, though - not sure.
I have to have a washer and dryer combined, for reasons of space. It limits choice wonderfully! I've had Hoover machines for years, largely because I know a good repair firm. I don't think they score all that highly in tests, but I find them quite good, and reliable, too - I've had my current one for years, and when it goes I shall just get the modern version of it.
Milly knows a lot about washing! She'd probably have some ideas.

I have a combined washer/dryer, too, as I only have space for one unit and don't have anywhere to dry clothes outside. I had just had a lump sum of back pay when I needed to buy it, so I got the top model on the market and it cost me a fortune but it is fabulous. I would like to have been able to justify a cheaper one, but mine is the only "A" rated washer-dryer available, and it's also practically silent which becomes a major factor when you have an open-plan flat with the kitchen in the same room as the hi-fi and TV Whatever you end up buying, get it from John Lewis if they sell it ("never knowingly undersold") and use a cashback site like Quidco. I got £30 back on mine thanks to Quidco. ( www.quidco.com - no connection, etc etc).

Like Mary, I went for the one which looked the least complicated. It`s always performed perfectly well i.e. it washes clothes. What more could I want?

I've never had a washer/drier. When I didn't have room for two side by side, I used a stacker to have one on top of the other. Couldn't recommend a washer/drier I'm afraid.

In that case I think the Whirlpool toploader is the very best. I had one in America and they're wonderful. Huge capacity - great for bedding and towels. Ecologically sound. Unfortunately I don't have one in this country. I have two perfectly adequate Bosch washers that I've had for years and years. I can recommend those. When one of those bites the dust I'll treat myself to a Whirlpool.
