Had a strange smell in the bathroom for the last couple of days. Not mouldy or damp or musty but it reminds me of unpleasant cough pastilles, hard to describe. I thought it might be the drains so I put thick bleach down them. But today the smell's still there so I sniffed round all the walls and I think it's coming from inside the electic shower unit on the wall - yet it doesn't smell like it's overheating. And the circuit-breaker hasn't been triggered. Can anyone suggest why it should be smelling?

The electric shower unit? Unpleasant cough pastilles?  Could some shower gel with menthol have leaked in and be going nicely rank in the warm, dampness when you switch it on?  Failing that...can't think of anything that smells like that.  Some sort of mould?  Mould can smell very peculiar.  Have you looked underneath the actual unit?  If it's all black - that's your answer!

Oh dear, David Sad  Are your heating and hot water both on the same boiler?

Lack of heat can be remedied by the judicious use of cheap standalone heaters.  Lack of hot water - well, if your washing machine and dishwasher are cold-fill, that's pretty much just the bath and shower you're missing.  Do you both have shower facilities at work?

I hope you get it sorted out soon.

Hot water and central heating yes.  Jo was supposed to working from home on Friday so she went off and bought an electric radiator which is sitting in the lounge/diner and an electric blanket, which are just about keeping the chill-off.  Showers are available at work fortunately.

Is a repair on the horizon?

I'm having big trouble with my computer, folks. It's being repaired at the moment, but I don't think I'll have it back today.

See you all later this week!

Best wishes,

Pim

Dear David, I hope you heating will be sorted soon. Why do these things always break at the most inconvenient time.
Once someone is working on it you will feel better.

Pim, We are going to miss you. Come back soon.

Having recently converted to broadband i am generally much happy mainly because so much faster - however lately find seemingly simple operation of putting websites onto favourites only working now and again - lots of times i try and save site to fav and get flwg announcement

if anybody knows what this means would be grateful as its driving my stress levels up on such a trivial thing - ironically saving sites to favouites on dial up worked every time

We've got an 80 mph gale blasting away here, complete with hailstones!  It's forecast for Lancashire and Cumbria for the next 24 hours.  My friends are on the way here for 7.30 so I hope they arrive safely.

I might get the rest of next door's guttering now - and they might get mine too.  Shocked Shocked Shocked

offbeat,
I can not help you, but there are smart people on computer thread. May be you can ask them (in case they don't see this post).
I am always stressed out if things break, or my computer is down.
We have it reasonably quiet at the moment, but I don't think it is for long. There are more storms coming.
I hope Milly's house is not damaged and everybody is safe.
Keep us posted.

Thank you t-p.  My friends arrived safely and have now just left after a delightful evening, but it is still howling out there.  There has been a lot of lightning too.  Very beautiful and spectacular over the sea.  I love the sea.  Never the same twice.  That said, it comes a bit nearer here at high tide than it used to when we first moved here 18 years ago - global warming I suppose.  It's quite scary sometimes.

No damage here as yet but the night is yet young and there has been no let-up at all.  My poor mother is on the top floor of a 6-floor block on the sea front and she says she can actually feel the building move!  Shocked

Oo! Scary!

Time for a GRUMP!!! Though I'm not as upset as I was a few hours ago.

I had a clinic appointment at 3pm. I arrived at 2.55 and found that our surgery now has touch screen thingys so I registered my identity and it informed me that the nurse I was booked in with was running 20 minutes late. That's OK, I thought, I'll just pop round to the nearby chemist for some toothpaste. I returned at about 3.07 only to be reprimanded for arriving late and told I'd missed my appointment. What's the point in telling patients there's a 20 minute wait if there isn't? Angry The receptionist told me that once I'd arrived I should not have left the building - in case there was a fire! I did point out to her that there was no sign telling patients that. Hmm...would they really have a computer with all our names on it in the car park if the building was evacuated? And would people really hang about for their names to be called out? I'm sure I'd just go home.

MJ,

Yes, in order to comply with health and safety legislation.

MJ,

If you don't want to risk the life of a fireman looking for unaccounted patients then I suggest you go to the correct assembly point and remain until the roll caller has registered your presence.

Four firemen died in Warwickshire in 2007.The report has not been published yet, but one possibility is that they went into a burning warehouse to find people who were not accounted for.

Re the firemen's deaths, a real grump for me. Another possibility is that where they entered the warehouse they were unaware that there was a mezzanine floor above them which collapsed onto them, and yet another possibility is that their breathing apparatus was faulty. As I say, nothing has been reported yet.
