Agreed Mary.  At the Christie there was a designated 'smoking room' but for some bizarre reason, nobody used it.  Undecided

but I think Walter Raleigh has a lot to answer for with this one.

Sir Walter Raleigh's contribution to Western "civilization": Marlboro's and chips.

A housemate of mine seems to have disappeared.  His keys (we think) appeared on the staircase a couple of days ago, and his room (his door was left slightly ajar, so we checked) is empty mostly, except for two black bags, both with bin-collection-labels on them, and sixty quid on his bedside locker (possibly for bills).  He has up until the end of the month paid on his rent.  He disappeared for a while last month; he was in hospital back in germany.  We rarely saw him about anyway, but it's a bit odd that he would just disappear.

Another housemate texted him yesterday morning, but no reply.  I'm all for trying to get somebody to replace him before next month's rent is due (and keeping the deposit), but I don't know if housemates are in favour of that.  Safer to wait 'til the end of the week probably.

Odd, though.

The ties that bind

Indeed Increptio, thats very odd. Ive never been in a situation where house/flat mates are concerned but from a common sense point of view, it would be best if said something to at least one of you guys, so that the air may be cleared a bit. Communication not a strong poin t of that person, by the sound of it.

Very strange, inko; though rather than text, wouldn't it make more sense to call the number? That way you'd know whether it was going through to voice mail or the number was no longer available: if the latter, then that's another tie broken, which would make it look more likely that the clean break was intentional.

What on earth did you do to him? Lips sealed

incs, I'm assuming that his clothes and other personal effects have gone as well? Ron has a point about phoning as opposed to texting. Might give you more of an idea of what's happening.

I've sent him a text-message myself there; will see if it delivers or not.   If it doesn't get through, then there's no point calling (though I might try).

nothing!  Landlord gave him a bit of a talking to last week for being sick from what I heard, but I haven't heard anything other than that.

Never mind replacing him as a house-mate, this person could be dead
Having prepared for his own departure in advance?  It's a possibility, sure.  I feel like rummaging about in his bags now to see if there's anything interesting/informative stashed away in them.  Roll Eyes  (I won't though, not for the time being)

incs, I'm assuming that his clothes and other personal effects have gone as well?
Other than a few lighters in his drawer, yeah.  I assume that most of what's in the two black bags are clothes.

There's an apple on his locker as well, did I mention that?

incs, I'd be inclined to check the bags to ascertain whether it's clothes in there or rubbish. You'd only have to open them a tad and have a peek to see if it's full of papers and pizza boxes, it wouldn't mean that you're prying.

Must admit that it's a rather odd way to go about leaving. Disappear, leave your keys behind and your clothes. Unless he doesn't want his clothes?

I'd imagine if he was moving back to Germany that he wouldn't be much bothered with them (especially given his wardrobe).

Bejazuus.  It is so long since I lived in a bin bag as a student that if I disappeared I would expect a bit more hue and cry not some bluddy middle class "well I sent him a text"

Texts often get delayed, or don't go through.  If you just call, even hearing if the number goes straight to voicemail - or if the ringing you hear is not the normal UK sound - will tell you a lot right away.  And it's not as if you'll have to pay for ringing a foreign number.

All these spiffing new ways of communicating, and communication seems more difficult than ever.  Did you particularly dislike him?  If not, it only seems human to try to reach him by the most direct and immediate means possible in such strange circumstances.
