'And seeing Daphnis and Chlöe, written in green' doesn't have the same ring to it...

Daniel, I put the oil in last thing at night whilst inclined (if you see what I mean) - a few droplets dispensed with a pipette or off the back of a small teaspoon, and wiping off any excess. I suppose you could keep it in with an earplug, though I don't bother. Then in the morning, into the shower or bath for a good soaking. It can take several days of this procedure to really soften it up. Hope that helps.

Thanks, Martin, I'll give it a go tonight.

Grumpy Old Rant Time:

If anyone else makes a comment about how lucky teachers are to have six weeks holiday, I shall not be responsible for my actions!! Yesterday, I helped the caretaker move 120 new tables into the hall so that all the classrooms were clear so the cleaners could shampoo all the carpets. (Contract cleaners who, for the first five days of the holidays didn't show) Today, I hoped to receive a County Supplies stationery order and distribute to staff, but it never turned up. The cleaners were an hour and a half late and I ended up in school for six and a half hours before my room was eventually done and I could get my new tables in place. Still, I got most of the stuff from my cupboard transferred and tidied into a new, larger one I'd commandeered!

When I finally got home, I had a phone call from the bank arranging my mortgage and the hapless bloke on the end of the line made a comment about my six week holiday. I'm afraid I gave him chapter and verse about how, having been 'on holiday' for two weeks now, there have only been two days, including weekends, when I haven't darkened the doors! I think he got the message.

Rant over. Let normal service resume...

Congratulation IGI, You have done so much in one day!!!
Holidays can be very tiring. At least you have your cuboards tidied. You carpet is clean now in your office and in your scool.
Isn't that fantastic!!!

Why does everything takes longer than one expects?

Well, I reckon the other teachers are lucky having you doing all that for them, IGI. I hope you do find time for some real relaxation this "holiday" as you need it after a busy year. Though moving house isn't easy...cue for another grump about nothing going right in my attempt to move...grrr Angry

Just have an episode of Lewis on the box in the background (it's been a hard day, I'm allowed) - Barrington Pheloung's music (I presume it's still written by him?) is a huge rip-off of Cage's In a Landscape, with a string (or probably electronically-generated strings) as a backdrop. Hmmmm....

Smiley Thanks tp. I've been too patient, that's part of the trouble! Undecided Sometimes being impatient and kicking up a fuss can result in much more rapid progress. Roll Eyes

From a person who has no idea what teachers get up to in holiday time, it was an interesting rant, as far I as I was concerned. The general public at large, really dont have a cluie as to what teachers do in this time, so really any teachers out, like IGI etc, would be quite interesting to enlighten us. Please!!

Delighted to oblige, bbm!

So far this holiday, I have:

Cleaned my classroom from top to bottom and repainted scuffs on the walls, door, skirting boards etc
Washed and ironed curtains to our cloakroom area
Taken covers off old books and shredded them
Sorted through Wet Play games – repaired/ thrown out stuff
Met with colleague (who's never taught Yr 6 before) re planning for next term
Collected new exercise books and written names on
Printed, laminated and folded Spellbinders (a Look, Cover, Write, Check method for practising spellings)
New tray labels printed, laminated and stuck on trays
Sorted through transfer information – looking through reports, tracking data, test papers from last term, IEPs etc – to work out ability groups for Maths and Literacy for new term
Taken delivery of new furniture and transferred to hall; removed the cardboard coverings
Moved all my books, files, resources from a pokey little cupboard outside my classroom to one recently vacated

Jobs still ahead of me:

Maths and Literacy medium-term planning, getting my head around the new frameworks (not a quick job at all!), plus short term plans for the first couple of units
Check through History planning and make any alterations + organise a possible trip to the British Museum (should involve a recce next week some time)
Sort Maths resources in classroom, which have become muddled up
Put up displays for the new term – one on Greeks, possibly one on our Science topic or a Writing Wall, one on multiple intelligences, plus prepare display work linked to feelings/emotions and our revised behaviour policy
Decide upon guided reading books for the new term, reading any ones which are new to me, and preparing chapter bookmarks, containing reading targets and key questions for discussion during sessions
Laminate name cards for using on our class ‘jobs for the day’ board
Take delivery of much-needed stock order (who knows when it will arrrive?!) and distribute to classrooms
Prepare timetables, rotas etc for use of the hall, library, ICT Suite, music room, playground duties, assembly responsibilities
Put up new information display in staffroom containing above info + key dates for the years, minutes of meetings etc
Meet with the HT to discuss our School Improvement Plan, Ofsted self evaluation form and INSET for first day back in September

Only the last four are really in my management capacity. I imagine other teachers have very similar tasks to do, although this obviously varies from school to school and dependant on the age group taught. I know some of my KS1 colleagues spend a lot of time making things and trawling car-boot sales for toys in good condition. I've probably missed something off my -to do' list! MJ?  Cheesy
