What's with calling girls Chelsea ? You don't come across many Fulhams do you ? Or Chiswicks.

I have often wondered about the possibilities of the Underground map in this respect.

Brondesbury sounds very manly.  A girl who could carry off a name like Cockfosters would have considerable hutzpah.  Would Harlesden be better for a man or woman?

My brothers and sister asked my Mother why she was not more imaginative with our names and she replied that they were good honest names that couldn't be messed about and there is a lot of sense in that I guess.

There is one youngest member of our tribe whose middle name we all dislike but as it's only a middle name no-one has said anything.

Apart from the Casey/Chelsea names I know a little girl called Liberty and another called Macey-Belle  Huh  Quite cute when they are little but not so cute when they are middle aged?

Perivale would grow up to be a pale skinned, possibly effete young man given to frequent respiratory ailments. Harrow and Wealdstone - perfect for twins. Arsenal is not be considered under any circumstances.

 Cheesy Cheesy Don Basilio

And Theydon Bois and his friend Arnos Grove would have to be a pair of extremely camp thespians!

Can't say I think those are cute at any age, Ant, but I do agree that there are names that are better for children than adults. Apologies to anyone with these names (which I like, but still think are better for children), but I would put Lucy and Robin in that category.

The ballerina Merle Park always sounded like a tube station to me, and Britten named one of the children in Albert Herring, Harold Wood, after a station near/in Romford.

Talking of Merle Park, made me think of Antoinette Sibley. I rather fancied Antoinette for a girl, but I did take some notice of my father when he said that most people would think of Marie Antoinette rather than Antoinette Sibley, and also no-one would know whether to pronounce it in French or English. I ditched it, but since I never had a daughter it didn't arise in the end.

Mary, I know an Antonia, which I like better than Antoinette, but then both names get shortened to Toni don't they?  We have a current Lucy which is OK but agree Robin is a bit iffy as a grown up name.

On the London Underground:-

Snaresbrook would grow up to be a gamekeeper who lurked in the potting shed with MiLady, his fine linen shirt open to the waist and moleskin trousers clinging to his thighs, Dollis Hill would become a drag queen and Hainault is clearly a French fop!

bbm, the brother of your friend call his daughter Victoria after their house Huh Huh

Meanwhile back on the Tube map ... Debden is a chap much given to tweeds and pipe smoking. Enjoys a decent malt at the end of the day. Leyton is an altogether louche sort of fellow. Smirks in an unsettling manner at males and females alike. Never pays his bar bill.

Mort (see there we go shortening it  Grin) we had five girls in our class with your real name when I was at school - but I was always the only one of mine.  I hate my name and it gets shortened as well.

Signed

Mudchute. A very Dickensian fellow, much given to hanging around on street corners and unctuously rubbing his hands together.

Back on the tube map, children christened Canonbury, Parsons Green and Southwark will all grow up to be CoE Clergy.

Meanwhile Park Royal is to star in the new James Bond film.

I was going to mention Wapping but thought it may not be Poplar!  Cheesy

Shadwell is another Dickensian character, much taken to rubbing his hands down his stained velvet waistcoat and muttering "I am ever so 'umble Young Sir"

Pimlico - it is the on-dit that this Italian interior designer is the must have this Season for your Salon.

Bounds Green is a retired major living in an hotel in Sussex constantly enquiring "Is the sun over the yard arm yet?"
