In the words of the great Yogi Berra, 'it's like deja vu, all over again'.

Not my usual sort of read, but I found it quite amusing, but also poignant. My friend Mike Westlake, who had 5 novels published in the 80s and 90s but hasn't been able to find a publisher for his latest two (too literary or something ), was very surprised when we walked into a bookshop together and noticed that book on display: apparently Marina Lewycka was briefly his girlfriend a decade or two ago, before she became a famous bestselling novelist. Surprised and more than a little hacked off I would imagine! That's got to sting a bit...

But Tommo always remembers things from months back on this particular thread ... I don't know why, but I spotted ages ago and decided he must have a 'Currently reading ...' microchip in his brain.

Ta, tinners, and I must rush to say I wasn't chastising you (I'm sorry it came over that way). I do seem to have an odd affinity for this thread, and maybe there is something wired into my brain. Sadly, it's not particularly useful (unless we are playing a 'wochabinreadin-version-of-just-a-minute'), and certainly not as useful (in the eyes of Mrs 1780) as a chip to help me remember to put the teatowel on its hook without dragging on the kitchen floor.... COTIFARL 'On Religion' is a Theatre Essay. Part drama, part essay, part thought experiment. A friend recommended it to me saying 'This sums up exactly my views on religion'. But upon reading, I found that there were four protagonists, each with different views on religion. One view was dominant (which I think is my friend's view), but the play does the others clear (to me anyway) and doesn't ascribe a value to any of them. A very clear and concise way of getting over difficult concepts and getting an audience to think. I'm interested in more Theatre Essays. Anyone seen any? Tommo

My memory is obviously rubbish after all, as I forgot to say that I had read this:
COTIFARL It was very odd. After the first section I wondered where the author could possibly go, and was very intrigued by the book. After the second section, I could imagine all sorts of possibilities for the book and where he could take it. And after the last section I think I was disappointed that he hadn't taken me somewhere completely different. Still, a moving portrait of a fictional character, and food for thought (especially given the subject matter and seeing as I was suffering a hangover whilst I read several chapters) Tommo
