| Zum berühmten Arzt erhoben | The doctor famous |
| Ward er ohne viel Verstand, | became, without much intellect, |
| Weil er sah am Bett, ob oben | because he saw on the bed, whether at the head |
| Stand der Tod, ob unten stand. | stood Death, or the foot. |
| Stand zu Häupten der Gevatter, | If the reaper stood at the head, |
| Und man rief den Doktor bei, | and one called the doctor there, |
| Sagt' er ohne viel Geflatter, | he said without much fluttering |
| Daß kein Kraut gewachsen sei. | that no herb would wake up. |
| Aber stand der Tod beim Fuße, | But if Death stood by the feet, |
| Gab der Doktor Arzeneyn, | the doctor gave medicine, |
| Und der Tod mit leichtem Gruße | and Death with light salutes |
| Zog davon, als müßt' es seyn. | moved away, as he should. |
| Doch einst stand der Tod beim Haupte, | But one time stood the reaper at the head, |
| Als des Todes Pathe sich | when the reaper's reaper |
| Einen kühnen Streich erlaubte, | a bold trick allowed |
| Dem der Tod gezwungen wich. | whom Death was fated. |
| Um ließ er die Bettstatt drehen, | And he allowed the bed to be turned |
| Daß der Tod zu Füßen kam, | that Death stood at the foot, |
| Und von dannen mußte gehen, | and from thence he must depart |
| Ohne daß er's Haupt hinnahm. | without taking it with him. |
