So, I've just downloaded and am listening to a disc of Killmayer's (mostly) orchestral music, thanks to the Avant Garde Project, and I literally can't decide what I think.

So I thought I'd ask you all what you think for me.  Wink

Not long ago I would have dismissed much of it out-of-hand as reactionary nonsense (although the disjointed-gestural quasi-Rihmness of some of it mitigates that visceral, and admittedly superficial, reaction).  But there are seams to be heard here, and I'm getting a vague sense of hidden passageways and sharp corners; although all of this could be a result of people I respect finding value in his work and thus my willingness to give him a benefit of the doubt I otherwise might not.  I certainly don't want to chalk up my not-entirely-negative reaction to maturity!

So?  let's talk about Killmayer.

I've only just spotted this, Evan - better get on with some work just now before I take a break to gather my thoughts about Killmayer, but I thought I'd give the thread a bump.

I don't know the orchestral stuff, but on the basis of what I do know (songs and piano music) I'd say he's one of my favourite living German composers.

Also much admired by David Drew, whose tastes I tend to find often coincide with mine, for what that's worth.

I know nothing.

Seems like I'd better get that stuff downloaded now.

I've just been listening to Killmayer's Sappho, which sounds quite similar to the kind of thing Carl Orff was writing around that time (1960), in terms of vocal writing, harmony (what there is of it) and orchestration. Mind you, in this piece Killmayer seems to be attempting to evoke the music of ancient Greece, which is what Orff was also up to. I found Sappho a bit too plakativ and anecdotal, but it did encourage me to download the others (the ones that are left, that is).
