There seem to be 7 current versions of it available on CD, as follows:
Volker Banfield;
Marc-Andre Hamelin;
Gunnar Johansen;
Noel Mewton-Wood;
John Ogdon;
Garrick Ohlsson;
Francois-Joel Thiollier.
     I know the Ogdon version, but not the others. Can anyone reading this offer an opinion as to which is the best of these recordings for someone who wants to buy only one of them?

It's not the orchestrated (by Stock) version of F.C. is it?  Don't think so, from what's said.  Would be interested in hearing that.

Yeah; really like that p.c..

Anyway.

All I have is Ohlsson, in which the Men's Chorus seems to be singing into a cardboard tube (all of them into the same one, I think). But the playing is up to Ohlsson's usual standard (a high one IMO)

I have this Banfeld recording, but don't like it at all. Ogdon is still the best for me. There is also Viktoria Postnikova, which is incredibly slow. The whole piece weighs in at something like 90' (as opposed to the usual 65 or so). I also have a live Ogdon with an Austrian orchestra under (not literally) Leif Segerstam from about 1975 which is also really impressive. I also have a tape of Donohoe from the Proms about 20 years ago (? not sure about the date) which is mostly pretty good. Has anyone any concrete info about how much has survived of the Petri?

Jonathan, I think I read somewhere that only the first movement of the Petri recording survives but I'm afraid I can't remember where I saw that and I have no idea whereabouts you may be able to get it from, sorry - hope this helps anyway!

Personally, I have Ohlsson (it was cheap!) and the bit that is on Marc-Andre Hamelin's DVD but I've not really sat down and listened to any of it properly yet!

I think that Donohoe performance has been released on CD? I'm quite fond of both the Hamelin and the Ogdon, both utterly different.

It was, but is oop.

It's my favourite recording of the piece--it may be less ostentatiously virtuosic than, say, Hamelin, but Donohoe seems to have a really firm grasp of the architecture of the work. I can't do any closer a comparison with Hamelin, Ogdon and Ohlsson, though, as they all bit the dust in my last CD collection cull. Sad

He did indeed, although it was not a studio recording as such but a Prom performance that he gave many years ago; he still plays it from time to time.

I heard Grante playing it in Rome last year with just about the best male chorus I have ever heard in this work; I believe that he will be recording it some time next year but have no specific details on that.

For me, it's Hamelin and Ogdon in this work, too, where recordings are concerned; Ogdon tops my poll list with Hamelin running second (if one must do such assessments!) - very different from one another, as you say.

Best,

Alistair
