Mainly I wanted to say that I've watched this a couple of times recently
and it's been growing on me. Some time ago here or at TOP I acted on a recommendation to get a CD of Schreker's orchestral music, which happened to begin with a concert version of the prelude to this opera, and, without quite knowing why, I was particularly struck by that piece: the orchestration is extravagant and the overall sound decadent in an almost
Salomé-like way, but without Strauss's harmonic sophistication, or, to look at it another way, without Strauss's harmonic tics. The entire opera is even more impressive, I find. And this production from the Salzburg Festival is quite impressive too.
Does anyone know how this work compares to Schreker's other operas? I notice that quite a few of them have been coming out on CD.
