I've come across a CD with this title and I'm debating whether to buy it... the problem being that I have never even heard of any the composers! These include:

Einar Englund
Pekka Jalkanen
Aulis Sallinen
Paavo Heininen
Olli Mustonen
Usko Meriläinen
Jyrki Linjama
Aulis Sallinen
Tapio Nevanlinna
Einojuhani Rautavaara

Can anyone give me any clue what to expect? I adore violin music but If "modern" means "in the sytle of Birtwhistle (etc.)" then I'm not sure I will appreciate it  Undecided  (Sorry, modern music fans.)

It's worth a shot -- the only names I know there are Mustonen (a pianist by trade -- didn't know he composes), Sallinen (an interesting one, but what I know of him is the creepy-crawliest modernism, and I always meant to look into it further), and Heininen, the guy whom everybody studied with, if they studied in Finland.... Lindberg, Saariaho, Salonen, etc.

I hope I'm not getting the names wrong. Maybe some of them are lurking around here?

IRF

There's a thread on Rautavaara further down here in the music appreciation section ( i.e. the bit not categorised by centuries ).

That is about his orchestral music, nothing to frighten the horses there re. modernism but as for buying the disk, it depends how adventurous you feel. I wouldn't expect it to sound like Bach or Biber.

Oh, I overlooked the mention of Rautavaara -- that certainly isn't modernism, so I'm sure you'll have a blast with it. Go to it, IRF! And get a copy for me, too!

Rautavaara's certainly a pretty cool guy; don't recognise any of the other names though.  Sounds like it could be very exciting indeed!

I'm afraid I find a lot of Finnish contemporary music very middle-of-the-road modernist and rather characterless, with the exception of a few. I looked through the entire collection of piano music of the fimic in Helsinki a few years ago and was astonished by the general greyness. And one constantly hears the Finnish propoganda about the very high standards maintained there, and how they regard British music as very amateur and "unprofessional". Also, it is very hard to be taken seriously there unless one writes in a boring, modernist and predictable manner -- i.e. "professional" in their eyes -- so there seems to be very few composers with anything to say. Being a composer seems to be regarded as almost being a career choice, and one actually sees composers going to other composers' concerts wearing suits carrying a briefcase, rather like businessmen or bankers. There is very good music, however, by Jukka Tiensuu, Juha T. Koskinen and others.

Does that explain why the former economist with whom I sat opposite you in a Pizza Express recently is so keen on Finnish music? Wink

I'll second Jonathan's vote for Jukka Tiensuu.  He certainly doesn't fit into the nondescript, personality-less modernism category.

MT, the info I have is:

Kaija Saarikettu (violin)
Recorded 1993, released 1994.
Label: Finlandia
Cat. No: 4509 955802

so that does appear to be the some item. But 49 euros... holy moly  Shocked

The copy I found was on eBay and I've put in a bid of considerably less than €49. If you want to outbid me, please go ahead with my blessing... anyone who would consider paying €49 for it will undoubtedly get much more enjoyment from it than I am likely to Smiley

Thanks IRF

Info and links to composers can be found here ....

Looks very interesting but I would not break the unwritten members rule' Thou shalt not bid against a Fellow Member on EBay '

I've had chance to give it proper hearing now and it is... interesting... Smiley

There are 10 short pieces by 9 different composers, all written between 1965 and 1992. I can't give a proper description of what it all sounds like, but some of it is beautifully melodic, some of it is not but still has interesting structures, and some of it is totally beyond my understanding...

I won't say I love everything on the disk -- some of the pieces are very difficult to listen to -- but there is enough of interest to make me glad I gave it a chance.

Would love to know which pieces fit into each of those categories ... Smiley

I have always wanted to like the music of Aulis Sallinen. What's that like? And what are the titles?
