I was trying to check the wording of this piece this afternoon, and found two alternative versions on the Internet (nothing new there, then). My memory is that there were "Some" very old grasshoppers, but there are more occurrences of "Most". Was the work revised? Which is it in the original, "Some" or "Most"?

Bryn - it's "most".

An anthology (ed Young and Jackson Maclow), which I guess should be viewed as the primary source, presents it as follows:-

most of them
were very old grasshoppers

It's been misquoted for years, hence (presumably) the confusion.

Thanks autoharp. Poor Margaret Leng Tan has to make do with just the solo cricket in her recording of Cage's Sonatas and Interludes. Wink

"He who attends to the catalogue of flies published in most fishing books, will find himslf perplexed and confounded ... "

Ah, thanks for that, autoh. I was a little frustrated that Bryn's original question seemed so specifically directed at people who'd already know what he was talking about that he didn't even provide the whole quotation, but you've said enough to enable me more or less to work it out for myself.

One more question I'd be interested to know the answer to: When was this Anthology published? I hadn't realised Jackson MacLow had collaborated with Young; I thought of him as a much more recent phenomenon (probably because I first discovered him in connection with Ferneyhough ...).

Added Brownie points for any more information either of you might feel inclined to give beyond that. It does all sound very interesting.

I have the second edition (1970). The first dates from 1963.

La Monte Young's Death Chant (dated 23/12/1961) is "Received on the death of Jackson and Iris's baby, Gwendolyn Malka MacLow. B. Dec 19,61; d.Dec 22,61."

The Anthology contains a page of random-looking typewritten numbers and letters by MacLow with the following introduction -

"The text on the opposite page may be used in any way as a score for solo or group readings, musical or dramatic performances, looking, smelling, anything else &/or nothing at all."  [July 1961]

I don't think you had arrived on the scene by then autoharp, but Death Chant was included in the "Roger Smalley Memorial Concert" at St. John's Smith Square.

t_i_n, Jackson Mac Low was born in 1922 and was also ivolved with the Fluxus movement. I thought something of his was included in the Cage/Knowles "Notations", and a quick flick through reveals that it's his "Hare Krishna Gatha 3 (In memoriam: A. J. Muste)" which is illustrated therein.

Yep, but no relation to Matthew of that ilk. I checked with him last Thursday. It's a bit iffy that she does not get credit on the cover, spine, etc. The two of them edited it, and she did the page layouts.
