In conversation with someone at a gathering just before Christmas, I was talking about a Honegger CE (Symphonies 5 and 3) I had borrowed from the Library to see if I liked them but this person recommended a choral work which he said was much better. Unfortunately, I did not make a note of it, so I wonder if anyone can advise me on this. I went to the Library but they did not have any choral works available to borrow. So there's only one place to ask this question, I thought, and that is this site.

I look forward to hearing your comments.

I gave my granddaughters Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 and Symphony No. 2 for Christmas as they seem to be moving towards classical music via Classic FM which is often on in the house, so that's good.

Orchestrally, you're doing pretty well with the 3rd + 5th Symphonies!
In terms of vocal stuff with orchestra that's not obscure, there's King David(described as a dramatic psalm), Joan of Arc at the stake (stage oratorio) or A Christmas Cantata (soloist, choruses + orchestra).

Thank you, I have made a note of these for the next time I go to HMV.
I found the symphonies interesting, but was not inspired enough to buy, so I'll have to listen to them again at a later date.

I really enjoyed the performance of the 3rd at the Proms this year, Susan Doris.  I thought it was the best thing in the two Proms by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Mariss Jansons (with the possible exception of the previous night's Bartok encore, but that was only a short excerpt).  The Prom was repeated in last Friday's 1900 slot on R3 so it'll be on Listen Again for a few days more if you have time to listen to it.

I'd second Autoharp's recommendations, although I've never really enjoyed King David, much prefer Joan of Arc (good recording by Baudo - better than Ozawa) and the Christmas Cantata (Ansermet good here.)

I like the 2nd symphony, also fond of the Piano Concertino, and Pacific 231 is always worth a listen (Fremaux my favourite there).

Don't buy anything just because I've mentioned it! I don't actually know any Honegger choral music, I just know of it. Roslynmuse obviously does know the stuff so he's the man to heed. (Incidentally, happy birthday rm!)

autoharp - Not to worry! I'll have a listen first.

Htohe - thank you for info about concert. I've just tried to go to the page but it's come up with one of those 'internet cannot display the page' so I'll try again tomorrow.
