Can anyone recommend a version of the above? I have the Boulez/New Swingle Singers CD but can't live with that chap's American accent.

Poor Ward Swingle! It was written for him (and the old Swingles) after all...

This one's pretty good, Ted; although for my money the Swingles beat Electric Phoenix hands down in terms of verve and character. But at least EP are British.  Embarrassed

Thanks martle, consider me suitably chastened, Embarrassed although I did guess  from the Martin Luther King reference that the accent was entirely appropriate, I do find  Mr Swingle OTT. Thanks for  the Chailly info. ( I suppose John Gielgud never got.... no,I guess not) Undecided

The pity for me isn't so much the accent; it's that while the second tenor in the third movement is certainly primus he's also from time to time inter pares and at least on the Erato recording it very much becomes a matter of the New Swingle Singers. But verve and character aren't really something I'd like to be without either. Ah well.

I'd second martle's Chailly recommendation, Ted, though this one's also pretty impressive:

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I wish the BBC would put out the recording it made of Berio and the BBC Phil for a CotW during the 1980s. Berio had a particularly good rapport with the BBC Phil, and the performance was really excellent.
