I am preparing a Stockhausen seminar for the Spring of 2009 at my university.

On the syllabus will be detailed analyses of Gruppen, Klavierstueck X, Mantra, Inori, and something from Licht (not sure what yet, but maybe Der Jahreslauf).

We'll also spend at least one seminar session on 1960s Motown and one on S Club 7 (sorry).

I would also like to do some of the Intuitive Music with the class, and try our hand at realizations of Plus-Minus.

Has anyone here done realizations thereof, and are willing to share (experiences from doing) them? or know of realizations either approved or not approved by the guru?

Get in touch with Gavin Bryars. The version he created for John Tilbury to play, back in 1968, was very special indeed.

Some background reading I just found:
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3870/is_200007/ai_n8926220/pg_1

by Christopher Fox.

Also mentions versions by Richard Barrett and George Nicholson, as well as his own (Fox's) work together w/ John Snijder of the Ives Ensemble. Also includes an account of an effort by one Alcedo Coenen to automate the decisions of Plus-minus so that a computer can generate versions on its own. I do wonder how far Coenen has come with this undertaking.

There is an ensemble version and also a solo piano version by C Fox. My version was rubbish and I threw it away soon after its only performance in 1988. There is also of course the London-based Ensemble Plus Minus which has made a specialty of performing different versions of it.

My opinion is that realising it is a waste of time that could better be spent on writing one's own pieces or working on Stockhausen's later and more rewarding open scores such as Kurzwellen, Spiral, Pole, Expo and the texts of Aus den sieben tagen and Für kommende Zeiten.

Thanks for the advice, arby; we are still going to look at Plus Minus and try to articulate what exactly is so dissatisfying about it. I'm very curious to hear the realizations made by others. There is also one by Cornelius Schwehr, I think.

That Chris Fox article contains a number of alarmingly controversial assertions, doesn't it?

On another note, I propose Messrs I. Pace and T. Now as guest lecturers for your Motown and S Club 7 seminars respectively. Or dyew dyew ittolior celph?
