Just rediscovered a couple of piano pieces by this interesting Australian composer  (well, interesting to those who enjoy (I suppose) Bax, Ireland, Scriabin). Toccata Tragica and Sonata-Legend, both dark-coloured and passionate. There are 5 other sonatas - anybody know them?

Some background info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Agnew

Thanks, autoh. Never heard of him! (I thought Peggy Glanville-Hicks was the only dead Australian composer apart from Grainger. Wink)

Not the greatest performance, but it will give you an idea: Capricornia parts 1 + 2 (= Sonata Legend) played by Alexander Svergensky rather a long time ago.

More like it! Fantasie Sonata (1927) as played by the composer.

And bits of the score -

And the Sonata Poem (1935), also played by Agnew.

And a bit of score -

I feel sorry for myself because I can not hear the music. I think it is because my connection is slow.
I had to cut the program off because it doesn't respond. I hope that the problem will fix itself.
It get frustrated sometimes with computers.

Thank you for your post, autoharp.
I was able to read the score. It looks like a big show piece, colourful and technical.

Are there any shorter works by the same composer?

There are indeed many shorter works, t-p! Many scores of such pieces can be viewed at

which contains both recordings and scores

I checked  your first post with fantastic sites. They are so good that I doubled my efforts to get my computer working faster. I have to wait a few days. But I am so excited that I can see the score. I hope I can print it too.
I can not listen to anything from the net at the moment because of slow speed.

Waiting for technical support is never easy, but the subject belongs to another thread.
Thank you so much again.

From Larry Sitsky's book on 20th century Australian piano music

Loads of info about Agnew's piano music.

autoharp,
Thank you very much for these sites. I now have computer and printer working. I even have a scanner, but I don't know how to operate it.
Fortunately I don't really need it.

Thank you again,
