Hello, fellow boarders, it's been a while since I posted 'over there' but I put in a brief appearance today (on Rautavaara, about whom I know nothing) and I have been reading this excellent and well set up forum over the past few days, so I thought I'd sign up.

It's important to have a forum where people can say if they don't like something about R3, without being unduly censored by a regime. It looks like this is a more suitable arena.

Classical music, in particular, needs all our skills of preservation, and I know that this is the place to find enthusiasts of all musical persuasions.

You were asking about Rautavaara on the other board. I have the Naxos issue of Cantus Articus and think it is a very good version. I know Naxos is sometimes looked on as less than top class, damned with faint praise like " worth a try at that price" But this is a cd I play often. Coupled with a piano concerto and symphony so varied too. And Finnish performers to give a sense of authenticity !

Hi Martin!  Glad you could join us.  You'll find it's a little less restrictive, and definitely less tetchy over here.

Cheers

Hi BobbyZ

I have the Naxos Rautavaara and it works for me! I don`t turn my nose up at them, although I know some do. They have been an absolute blessing for those who can`t always afford  `top of the range` prices. I don`t think the low price  necessarily indicates sub-standard performance.

Gawd bless Naxos, I say!

"Pssst!" said a passing stoat...

"Don't tell everybody, but if you have the patience to navigate the site, there are quite a lot of "classic" recordings available >here<"

Then she got back on her stoatcycle and stoatled away.

Hi Martin and welcome,

Re. the Naxos Cantus Articus. Definitely worth getting. I completly agree with what the others have said. Budget price does not always mean budget quality

Thanks Morticia and WeeCalum. I'll check out the Naxos Rautavaara.

I have had many happy purchases from Naxos; sometimes a Naxos is my lucky dip purchase at the end of a medium-length CD shopping list, and I've rarely if ever been disappointed. In fact, now that one can listen to a preview (pre-listen?) on the Naxos website, there should be hardly any dud buys.

Happy listening!
