My friends saw Rostropovich on TV in a concert (his 80s birthday). My friend is a doctor and she told me that unfortunately he doesn't look good. I now don't expect good news. I wish him health and good recovery.

A friend of mine was singing in that Birthday Concert...  Rostropovich was so ill that he was taken back to hospital even before the interval,  although the television were (rightly) asked not to show or mention this until afterwards.

My friend tells me he looked so bad she thinks it must be cancer. All of it sound so terrible even to think about.

I'm afraid it's definitely cancer, as he is in a specialist cancer treatment centre - Putin was filmed on tv visiting him there, so this is public knowledge now.  But his general health was very good until recently and he is a physically strong man (he was conducting even at the end of last year), so I hope he can withstand the treatment and recover much of his health.
