The true artist cares only for his art, and writes not for his own coterie in the present-day, but for humanity in general five hundred years and more into the future.

The way things are going, by 2508 there will be so much art requiring subsidy that the worlds entire GNP will be used up giving each work its routine 10-yearly outing. (As long as those 50 people are ecstatic how could one complain?)
