Did anyone heard Angela Hewitt recital on radio 3 this afternoon?
She is going to have a tour playing all Bach (18 months). I like the idea that they are trying to attract attention to Bach and all that. I am not so sure if I liked her performance.
It is hard to tell who is going to be great pianist. One has to sustain career for many years.

I was not impressed too much, though to learn all the pieces is hard enough. However, the whole thing sounded like publicity stant with introduction and interview etc. I did not like that.

Unfortunately that's the current trend on R3...  they did the same with the "Bach Christmas" two years ago.

I think Angela Hewitt is being used as a bit of a cash cow by Hyperion, probably because of their court case fiasco and the subsequent financial difficulties. She seems to have recorded a vast amount over the last year / eighteen months of various repertoire and that must have effected quality. Solo piano is a fairly cheap recording option too I would imagine.

Anything is possible, of course, but the words ‘publicity stunt’ and Angela Hewitt don’t usually spring to my mind in the same thought.  Ms Hewitt has played twice for our small concert society in the last few years and the person I saw didn’t strike me as the kind who either needs or courts publicity.  She came across as a friendly, unpretentious person with a genuine love for the music she was playing.  I certainly enjoyed her performances (just as I enjoyed this afternoon’s broadcast) and the society members who are music experts were more than happy with her technical competence and artistic interpretation.

I haven’t really followed her recording career but I’m very satisfied with the discs of hers that I’ve bought.  She was also happy to stay behind after the recitals she did for us, answering questions and signing disc covers.  She is certainly very busy but I think if you look at her schedule here:

http://www.angelahewitt.com/schedule.php

you’ll find it’s not all major halls (or even major cities) and prestigious events.  I find it easier to believe her hectic schedule is the result of a genuine commitment to bringing music to as wide an audience as possible.

I think the publicity machine did Miss Hewitt a great disservice by having her described as "The pre-eminent Bach pianist of our time", as if anybody could ever be that! Admire her as I do, I certainly wouldn't be without Schiff or Perahia.

I agree with rauschwerk and would not call Angela Hewitt as my favourite Bach performer.
On the other hand they have to build interest in performers to attract the audience. I admire her that she plays Bach, Scarlatti repetoire. She is young and good role model for young.

At the end of her recital she played arrangments of Gluck I think, popular things for the audience.

My post reflects my thoughts on quality of her performance. I usually shy away from promoted people. However, may be my attitude is strange. Promotion means a lot now days. Also to know so much Bach is very admirable. Is she next Gould?

Thanks, trained-pianist; it makes me feel far less of an old duffer to read this about someone a mere three years my junior!

I know what you mean, t-p, about shying away from highly promoted performers. Having said that, there's a difference between publicity in proportion to talent and the exaggerated promotion of those who either have not had a chance to prove themselves in a career or are being promoted primarily on the back of some other "talent" (eg highly photogenic...)

Angela Hewitt doesn't particularly strike me as over-hyped, and what I have heard of her I have almost always enjoyed, including her Bach. Hers is not the only way though, and as well as Rauschwerk's Schiff and Perahia I would add Tureck, Edwin Fischer and Richter. Gould of course is in a category of his own. Hewitt strikes me as being the opposite of Gould, if anything a touch anonymous in her 'perfection' - that's my biggest reservation about her playing. But I guess you mean she is like Gould from the point of view of knowing and playing so much Bach. And I'm hoping to hear her 48 live at some point next year!

Thank you roslynmuse. I was very interested in your opinion as I have noone here to discuss things and I did not hear her life.
They play Bach's music differently now than previously. I loved Schiff's Bach and Beethoven. With Angela Hewitt just the fact that the concert is too commercial turned me off with interview in the middle. I am old fashion this way and don't like this sort of thing.
