The rules look fine to me. I'm a new boy here so know little about the background, but countless message boards are controlled by 'Nazi Admins' who strut about, bark orders, skulk for days in the mod bunker having paranoia attacks, and then emerge to write amazing clauses into the rules making it a disciplinary offence to question their orders and, basically, for normal people to enjoy themselves. The above strike me as a fair balance between preserving free speech and this being a safe and friendly place, with no lunatics skulking in the bunker telling people what to write on the internet.

would it not be possible for the administrator/moderators to send out a mass email or PM to all members when changes are being made/proposed?

In theory the tab marked 'notify' (see near the bottom of this page) enables you (or anyone) to set up email notification of replies for this or any topic. So that service is already available on an opt-in basis and not just for this thread.

Thanks for pointing this out, Ollie. I'd not been adventurous enough to click on this NOTIFY button before to see what happened!

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Thanks, Ollie. That would be a reasonable solution for me, I guess - I'll just do it on this thread, so as not to get swamped by notifications on other, less important threads.

I do think it should be borne in mind though that rule changes and the like affect all members, including some who only log in intermittently, and it would be good if ways could be found of ensuring as many as possible are made aware of new developments in a more reliable way than simply posting on the Announcements board.

Clicked on NOTIFY  this evening.  It has taken a couple of hours to come up here.

With respect, all that will show is any additions/changes made to this thread.

The point of the announcements board is to bring to the attention of members, things that we, as a team, believe members should know.

I agree that some announcements may be best E-Mailed to users, and in the past we have used this to bring very important situations to members attentions.  But in all honesty, a simple single ammendment to the rules (and in this case one that will pretty much never be used, and one which only people who break the existing rules need worry about) isn't exactly anything to write home about.

As far as I'm concerned, surely the most important people to be made aware of any 'changes' are the people that actually visit here.  If you want to find out information about a forum without actually visiting it, then that seems a little odd to me.  But if you do visit it, a quick two minute visit to the aptly named 'announcements' board, will bring you up to date fast.  It is, after all, what it is intended for.
