I must say that I really like the new Essay programme. I found last week's essays about W.H. Auden interesting and entertaining. I was afraid of hearing only a lecture, but we got different (and excellent) voices and music. I often think that British speech programmes are too long. 15 minutes is a very appropriate duration.

Overall, broadcasting The Essay means an improvement of BBC Radio 3. Smiley

Hear hear. I used to love Late Junction, but I think I'm going to like the Essay too.

It's also a nice replacement for Twenty Minutes.

I will miss that programme enormously. Sad

WH Auden is all over the news websites today for different reasons entirely...

pim.

It's not the new Essay programme. It's the old interval talk. Broadcast at a fixed time, so that the many listeners who were too thick to work out that it was on during the interval of the evening concert (i.e. about half-way through), can now know exactly when it is on (i.e. when most of them are in the land of nod). Roger BWright seemed to think that audience figures for the interval talk would leap, now that it's on at 11pm. What a jerk.

Anyway, last night's effort about the history of European language - very interesting. Having learned a little of most European languages (our cricket team gets everywhere!), I had realised how different Estonian, Hungarian and Finnish were from their neighbours, and am keen to know why.

Hardly an essay, though. Hardly Macaulay. More like a refugee from Radio 4.

Interesting point, Chichivache.

I sometimes don't understand why a certain programme is broadcast on Radio 4 and not on Radio 3. This afternoon there was a half hour programme on Rachmaninov on Radio 4 and last week there was a nice programme called Cut Price Classics about bargain records in the 1950s and 60s. One of the guests was Rob Cowan. Why is this on Radio 4 and not on Radio 3? Mystery. Huh

Absolutely, pim. R3 should have had that prog. And in return they can have Burnside and guests for chat and tunes.
