The reading is being produced as part of our FORGOTTEN CLASSICS series, which runs from March to August and features rehearsed readings of rarely - if ever - performed masterpieces from the last five hundred years. See www.primaveraproductions.com for more details.

MANFRED will be performed on Sunday 11 August at 8pm at the King's Head Theatre, Islington - the oldest 'fringe' theatre in London.

It will be directed by our artistic director, Tom Littler, and stars Harry Lloyd, best known as Will Scarlett in the BBC's Robin Hood, but also an experienced stage actor who has just completed a highly acclaimed run of Neil LaBute's BASH in the West End.

Tickets are priced at £7 (full) or £5 (concession). Concessions are available for U25s, students, members of university faculties, Equity members, registered unemployed, registered disabled, and senior citizens. A ticket for all six performances costs £25.

Tickets are available from the King’s Head Box Office:

Address: The King’s Head Theatre,
115 Upper Street
Islington

Duration: 120 mins

Written 1817, banned and never staged.

Manfred is the most unjustly neglected play of the Romantic age, banned from the stage in its author’s lifetime. Byron’s tragic hero sets out across the Alps on a lonely quest to escape the memories of an incestuous night of passion. Accompanied by music by Tchaikovsky and Schumann inspired by this dark, Faustian story, Manfred is a thrilling, darkly erotic piece featuring achingly beautiful poetry and passionate desires.

The lead role of Manfred will be played by Harry Lloyd. Lloyd is best known for his role as Will Scarlett in the BBC adaptation of Robin Hood. He recently completed a highly acclaimed West End run of Bash, by Neil LaBute. His many television credits include roles in David Copperfield, Goodbye Mr Chips, Warriors and Vital Signs. Previous stage roles include Doctor Faustus - a preparation, perhaps, for playing Byron's Faustian character, Manfred.

Do some of the real Lord Byron's alarmingly young boyfriends get a mention I wonder?  Undecided
