When in doubt, wash.

I'm wondering what to do with an old (bought by my father in about 1970) Hacker record player on which I used to play my 78s (33 & 45 rpm records too of course). Don't know if it's working now but someone did fiddle with the wires to link it up to our hi-fi speakers years ago and the sound was great. It's sat in the garage for years and will have to be disposed of soon, as will all the boxes of treasured 78s (Gigli, Caruso etc). Cry
Someone suggested eBay - does anyone here have any idea if people want these things nowadays? I don't expect much, if any, payment for them; I just want them to go to a good home. So if anyone reading this is interested and can pick them up from here (near Stockport, Cheshire), do let me know.

MJ

PS I have the manual for the record player somewhere - I'll pass that on too when I find it.

PPS Original post modified.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

MabelJane,

First of all, for ebay, be sure what you have. You mention fiddling with wires, that would suggest you don't actually have a 'gramophone'. A 'gramophone' is usally the term used in Europe for a manually wound machine, non-electrical, and usually listed in

Collectables > Radio/ Television/ Telephony > Phonographs & Gramophones

Your item would more likely be best listed with turntables, record decks and radiograms, which are sometimes listed there, but are best listed at

Consumer Electronics> Home Audio/ Hi Fi> Turntables> Turntables

To know if people want a Hacker record player you can check at ebay for recent itmes/bids and set up a favourite search which will monitor/alert any items/bids for you.

Gigli 78's are not in much demand, he sold millions and there's thousands of them at car boots, similarly with Caruso if they are re-issue HMV bright red label D.A. series. Earlier Caruso discs, particularly original issues pre-1921, are more collectable, on different coloured labels, often single-sided. e.g. this German issue currently on ebay:

Caruso and Scotti

under Music> Records> 78 RPM>

Thanks John, that's very helpful. I should have done some research before posting - sorry - but now I have a clearer idea of how to proceed. I'll change my title (if I can). My dad always called it a gramophone - and he still calls the radio the wireless. I think he rather likes using the older names for things. It's so long since I looked at the 78s I can't remember what they are. I suppose I should check carefully in case I have any worth a small fortune - but somehow I doubt it!

Yeah my dad always referred to the 'wireless'.

Ah, I said the earlier Caruso are collectable, I didn't say they were valuable  Wink His originals sold very well too and, among collectors, the UK issues are not scarce.

That German Caruso/Scotti 78 is one of the few of the seller's items to get a bid, at 2.99, but it might go no higher even though it is scarce, in Uk anyway. Another Caruso he is selling is a UK re-issue that likely sold a million or more, 'O sole mio', and there will be thousands still lying around today.

Considering their fragility I'm surprised there are so many 78s still around. It's good for collectors that they're not worth too much.
As I said before I'm very happy to pass these on to a good home as it's a shame to chuck them out but perhaps eBay's not the right place as that involves money.
A friend has just mentioned that swap website - called freecycle or something similar I think. I'll have a look for that. Meanwhile, someone reading this thread who lives nearly might still want them. I can hang on to them for a while longer.

Thanks for your replies John.

Best wishes,

Yeah, that freecycle is good for getting rid of stuff for free, it's a Yahoo group thing.

I've just joined my local freecycle. Looks interesting. I might offer the record player and 78s once I've sorted them out. But I mustn't be tempted to acquire anything!
