I agree that iTunes isn't perfect, but it's worth remembering what happened re one of the biggest gripes against it and iPods, namely the gap inserted between tracks which made listening to opera, in particular, frustrating; well, that's gone now, with the 'gapless tracks' facility, so perhaps an improved front page where you can alter the top section may one day appear...

It took several years for that "feature" to be introduced, however :/ Apple are generally pretty secretive when it comes to software development compared to other companies, alas.

Gapless tracks shouldn't be underestimated - as I understand it, it's a tricky problem with digital, since for each new track a new file has to be loaded up in place of the previous one, something that simply isn't possible to do without at least a tiny break in the continuity. Not a problem when reading a physical disc of course...

OK, gapless experts - your help is humbly solicited.
I'm having quite a bit of bother getting this gaplessness to actually work. I've loaded the Sibelius 2nd symphony onto my (new) iPod. Listened to it, third movement was coming to an end and then came the usual iPod fart before the finale started. (OK, not a 2-second gap or anything, but I'm sorry, still something I very much call a gap.) Not putting up with this, I thought - but fair enough, obviously I must have forgotten to tick a box somewhere.
Tried plugging in the iPod and editing the track info through iTunes (select all, get info, tick the gapless box). No luck. Tried erasing it and loading the music back on but having already ticked the box at the beginning. Still no luck - either for Sibelius 2 or the Emperor concerto, for example. Looks like I'll have to merge the attacca tracks into one file.
Or will I? Can anyone tell me what I have to do to make it genuinely fartless?

Why Do All Those People Out There Put Their CD Information Into The Data Base Capitalised? Do They Not Know That In Practically Every Language It's Likely To Be In For Classical Music It's Actually Wrong? It Looks Damn Silly And Fixing It For Every Disc I Import Is Giving Me The Squirts.

Agreed About The Capitalisation!! Drives me mad too. About the gapless tracks, in the 'Get Info' multiple item option, I click on the 'Gapless Album' box on the bottom right and change it to 'Yes' and then tick the box. This does work. I've not tried changing to 'gapless tracks' after importing the disc.

Anyone here use the "grouping" box? In theory, it's nice, because you should be able to group whatevers together. But given that the internet databases don't use it, it seems like it's really just a waste of space :/

And, if you are using Windows Media Player, why, once you've fixed it, does it keep trying to change it back? Does Bill Gates really think he knows better than I do how I want to catalogue my collection?

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I know it's only 6am but that may well remain the best laugh I have today.
For me the gapless tracks thing didn't succeed in completely smoothing the transition between for example the last two movements of the Piano Concerto No. 5 In E Flat Major "Emperor" or of the Sibelius Symphony No. 2 In D Major. But joining the tracks did.
It would by the way be remiss of me not to pass on Richard's recommendation for Mac users of the wonderful freeware Senuti which as its name implies does backwards what iTunes only does forwards, viz., put music on the iPod.
