There is no choice as far as I'm concerned, Bose Quiet Comfort 3 are in a class of their own - proud owner Grin

None of ya old-fashioned fixed frequency response with Bose.

I'm with Richard on the Etymotics. Pricey - but great sound and if inserted correctly (R's metaphor of brain insertion is close to the mark) will cancel most external sound. Good for planes and even the Victoria Line.

I've got the Bose Quiet Comfort 2.  A little bulkier than 3, but a bit cheaper and I prefer the over-ear design to the on-ear design.  They're great for planes.  My favourite way to use them is without any music at all - blissful calm, and the possibility of sleep!

Reiner, I have no experience of using them in flight, but use them regularly on the London underground and wouldn't travel on trains without them. They can be used on their own to effectively cancel continuous background noise, adding music improves the situation. They have a richness and frequency response that I've never heard before. I had a few technical faults, but my local shop on Regents Street were happy to replace with a new headset, no questions asked. If I lost them tomorrow I'd spend the high price again without hesitation.
