The BBC is improving the bitrate of live streams, latest info here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radiolabs/2008/09/the_latest_on_coyopa_the_mayan.shtml

There are also some comments about iPlayer problems.

Listen again quality has improved, thanks to iPlayer, as the article says. Does anyone know what sort of bitrates we're getting now? I'm recording Drama on 3 at the moment and my stats using Bandwidth Monitor give 0.16Mb/s with spikes of 0.32 Mb/sec - though I assume there's some buffering going on, so actual bitrates must be lower.

Hi

I recorded a performance on 3 via iPlayer last week, and the bit rate was 160 bps

The SD card in the Pure Bug filled up yesterday afternoon without my noticing, so last night's Po3 was not saved on that system. I therefore resorted to the iPlayer version, which should be a 192kbps mp3 stream. I was not able to monitor the bit rate, but the clipping distortion remains a major pain on the iPlayer.

I am off to work soon, but will try to remember to link to some screen grabs of the waveform when I get home. The clipping distortion is not a rare event, either. It characterizes much of the content.

Some months ago James Cridland, who is in charge of the project, posted at TOP to say the problems were being dealt with. They clearly have not been. At the time he advised that they were having to use the Sky signal as source ( i.e. 192kpbs mp2 ) and converting that to a 192kbps mp3 for the iPlayer. Sounds like he needs to tweak a few ears on his team.

Hi Bryn,

I downloaded the radio stream again using iPlayer downloader for Mac ( http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/34264) and Radio 3 is in fact 192kbs. Radio 2 and 4 are 128kbs . This is a nifty little program - although it errors on some content.

I previously used iRecordMusic.
