A shame his compositions were always on the short side.  Musicologists differ whether his musical brevity was an ironic reaction to the length of his name, or if he simply ran out of manuscript paper by the time he finished signing the customary dedication at the front.

IMHO, Gambolputty will forever be overshadowed by the mighty P.D.Q. Bach, one of the unsung heroes of the baroque era (some might suggest unplayed as well, with good reason). Sadly I don't know of any sites on the internet that offer access to recordings of P.D.Q. Bach's music. Even today his instrumental works offer more (indigestible?) food for thought than his song settings.

I would say that PDQ Bach was more an exponent of the galant or pre-classical style of composition.  Although heavily influenced by the baroque oeuvre of his father (exemplified by works such as the Canine Cantata "Wachet Arf" and the Short-Tempered Clavier), he clearly looks forward to the emerging classical aesthetic (vis his opera The Abduction of Figaro, Missa Hilarious, Variations on an Unusually Simple-Minded Theme, etc).  In fact some of his work is astonishingly forward looking for his time (Fanfare for the Common Cold).

No, for the epitome of high baroque, we need look no further than the name of Johann Gambolputty...

It has been said indeed that baroque could scarcely get any higher than that exemplified in the works of Johann Gambolputty... of Ulm since he was apparently still baroque-ing away until at least the latter part of the nineteenth century, unusual even for German baroque. But what works they are! Who can fail to be moved, for example, by the curlicued urgency of his Missa Contractus written for performance on the Second Sunday after Vaginismus?

I am shocked and dismayed at the dumbing down in evidence here. At least have the decency not to give in to the 'three minute culture' trend. P. D. Q. Thank you for reminding me of those illustrious composers, Bryn. I think they all lived in Gilly-Gilly-Ossenfeffer-Katzen-Ellen-Bogen-By-The-Sea.

I'm reminded of a comedy record from the 1960s about someone who wanted to buy a record of Engelbert Humperdinck (the singer, not the composer, sad to say) but who could never pronounce his name when asking for it at the shop.

I'd just like to note that I am not expecting IGI to comment on this thread.
