Just to let the mods know, this area has been tampered with.  I'd forgotten my password and when I logged in to my "secret question" it had been replaced with "why are you so stupid?"  Well I could have answered that at length on several sheets of foolscap and see riders A, B and C,  but hey it's Christmas!

I tried to write another one in and the "secret answer" section is no longer encrypted.

There are some really lovely people out there. Roll Eyes

Milly,

Sorry to hear about this. You'd think only Michael myself and maybe the mods have access. We'll look into this - by checking our own profiles first  Smiley

Best regards,

The fact is that nothing is secure.  Nothing at all.  I know from having been married to a computer expert that if someone wants to "get in" - they can.  I'm pretty sure that my own computer has a "spectator" even though my antivirus and spyware are kept up to date.  Certain little changes I notice from time to time give it away....but I'm past caring quite frankly.  If I'm so very interesting to someone I don't know, then I'm quite flattered.

Got that a bit wrong, I was thinking of Mr "Why are you all so boring ?" with whom there was a small skirmish.

Probably the same person.

Hi Milly

Just seen your post. I`m really sorry about this. It must have felt really unpleasant. I`m hoping that Admin and Mods might be able to put our heads together tonight.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem as Milly?

Milly, on my profile the 'secret answer' bit isn't encrypted either.

I'm afraid we'll have to get Michael to fix up your secret question; at any rate I don't think John or the Mods are able to open that particular 'compartment'.

If I'm so very interesting to someone I don't know, then I'm quite flattered.

I trust that's said in jest Milly. If you've really got a keyboard logger or similar on your PC then far, far worse than your r3ok info changing might happen.

myforum365 doesn't use a secure connection when you change your profile ie it's http://.... not https://... so it's probably not very secure from hackers at all. Your r3ok password is really there to protect you from the curious not the malevolent.

Far, far worse?  Access to my personal details?  Well let's face it, by the time that the Child Benefit people and the NHS have finished with us all - nothing's personal or confidential anyway.

I'm not jesting anyway but there would appear to be little I can do.  I'm as careful as I can be and I opt in to all the usual safeguards.  I'm just not sure that some of the "safeguards" aren't corrupted.  I've always been dubious for instance about spyware.

No matter how many times I delete the question, it comes straight back up.  Can anything be done?  If not I'm leaving this board for good.

Milly, I'm almost certain that only Michael can answer that question. I'm sorry but I really don't think the mods can help - we can do certain things here but don't as far as I know have access to every single parameter of the site. I have just had a look at your profile and the 'secret question' does indeed seem to be blank at the moment (previously I could see the offending question).

Andy's point is certainly a relevant one: myforum365's security isn't what you'd call airtight and that's in the nature of this kind of service. I would certainly suggest we bear this in mind and not put anything that needs to stay secret anywhere on the site.

If you're concerned about keeping your identity secret, don't use an email address on the site that reveals your name - set up a yahoo or hotmail address for the purpose.

And if you don't have a 'secret question' already set up, now might be a good time to do it. I don't see how someone who didn't have Milly's password would have been able to change that information on her page (I've asked Michael of course) - so that might not have helped in Milly's case. But leaving that sort of thing blank is probably not the best idea anyway.

I'm not even sure the owner of a forum can help. I'm the owner of another myforum365 forum and as such I don't have access to members' passwords. I can see their hidden email address, not sure about secret questions, though I doubt I can see those. The owner also cannot read PMs so, although they have far greater access than ordinary members, they are still limited.

The secret question should not be encrypted to you, we had the same thing when people were worries their E-Mail address wasn't  private even after ticking the box.

I don't mean to be alarrmist Milly, but if you have a visitor in you computer, this could very well be the problem.  If anyone has a visitor in their computer, someone that has access to their passwords to sites, what can any site owner be expected to do?  A trojan horse on your PC Milly could allow an unsavoury character to know EVERYTHING that you type... including passwords and bank details.

I would never be as bold to being a computer expert, but I would say that after working with computers for 7 years, nothing is safe unless you take the proper precautions.  If you suspect a spectator, then it is pretty unfair to blame the security of R3OK for any wrong doings, as in all honesty, it probably wouldn't be worth anyone the effort it would take to do what has happened to your account, and it is more likely someone HAS access to your password.  If this is the case, which it sounds like, what could we possibly do?

Looking at your profile Milly, I can't see a question attached to your account.  Is it still there?

I'm sorry that you feel the need to leave, but if I were you, I would be seriously worried about my PC, as this site is secure enough to not worry about at present.

Even a HTTPS site isn't exactly secure.  If neccessary, it could be hacked by posing as a fake Certificate Authority and fooling the computer in thinking it is talking to a server with a genuine certificate.

Please do not become alarmist, just because a site isn't HTTPS it doesn't mean it isn't secure enough for the job it does.  I'm pretty sure the BBC boards are HTTP, were people worried about the security there?

I'm not saying sites won't be hacked, but I'm saying that in this case it is very very very unlikely that it is this site being hacked and not an issue the users end.
