Author Topic: What's that symbol?  (Read 448 times)

Can anyone help me with this technical question, please?

Whenever I look at this MB, be it on the Mac or Windows machine, I get a little orange box with a dot in the bottom left corner with rays coming from it. I don't get that with any other site, although I don't look at a large range. Does it mean that I am transmitting data or that someone is in contact with me?

And while I'm here, on Windows XP I've been trying to stop those little yellow boxes from popping up that tell you what the thing is that your mouse pointer is over. I've tried the help centre but I don't know what they're called. Pop-ups, prompts, on-screen help - none of that works!

Many thanks,

Tone

I'm using firefox on the Mac and the symbol appears in the address window. But I use IE version 7 on XP and there are five little symbols near the top on the right. One is tools, another page and the orange thing only lights up when I visit this site.

Does it look like this?:

That's an indication that this site publishes an RSS webfeed. There's a pretty decent explanation of what RSS is (it's nothing scary!) on the Beeb:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/help/3223484.stm

Basically, it's an indication that this site is published in a parallel format that feed reader software can understand, so you can keep a continually updated eye on the site without actually having to be here. Most newspapers, blogs, forums, and other 'live' webpages like this use RSS, so you'll probably see the logo elsewhere too.

Having looked at this board's RSS feed though, it doesn't seem to be updating itself very regularly - it's stuck somewhere in February - so not much use subscribing to it....

OK John, my reader must be picking up an erroneous feed from somewhere. No matter.

Thanks for all those replies. I can't pretend to understand all of it but I shall sleep a bit more easily tonight.

A bit of technical advice in return. If you're trying to make a wireless connection using an Apple Mac and you're asked for the password, don't just enter the password as that would be too obvious. Put a dollar sign $ in front of it instead. That's been bothering me this afternoon. Who said Macs were more intuitive?
