Did anyone else hear this on CD Review this morning?

MOZART: Symphony No.41 in C major 'Jupiter' K.551
Freiburger Barockorchester, Rene Jacobs (director)
HARMONIA MUNDI HMC 901958 (CD)

Of course you did! What did you think?

I've never heard Mozart pulled about so much. At least it was different. It got me annoyed in some places but I never like to hear the third movement taken too slowly and this was the fastest I'd ever heard.

I heard this on Belgian radio last night (well, only the slow movement  Roll Eyes) - not knowing who the performers were.  I was impressed by the sound of the strings - I'm not used to HIP Mozart, but I really liked the stark sound of it and the non-vibrato playing.  But on the whole it seemed a bit lifeless and undramatic - not what I'm used to with the man who makes Haydn swing and Mozart sound like a roller coaster...  Didn't notice any 'pulling about', but I'm not very good at these things.

The pulling about I was thinking of occurs mostly in the first movement. The third theme, just before the end of the exposition, is played much slower than the rest of the movement. It's interesting that it's an HIP performance - would Mozart really have expected that sort of treatment, as there's nothing in the score to suggest it? The third movement kind of worked if you think of it as a scherzo rather than a minuet.

I thought Rene Jacobs was a phenomenal singer but I've never taken to his conducting.

Mozart's later symphonies seem to me so difficult to interpret because they make such demands of finish and refinement. I've heard many a conductor where I wish they had done something less demanding.
