Thanks, Ron.

My copy of the latest Bach cantata/ Gardiner set arrived this morning - recorded at Eisenach...beautifully performed.

Also VIVALDI Musica per mandolino e liuto - Rolf Lislevand, Ensemble Kapsberger. Naïve - they release these in France a good month before they get here, so I got mine sent over a few weeks back. Not as wild as Il Giardino Armonico on Teldec, but well played, a fine recording to add to a marvellous 'Vivaldi Edition'.

The latest Sibelius/ Vanska looks tempting...

 # 1         The Hungarian Quartet, I assume.  They've always had a formidable reputation.

I've always enjoyed the concertos like RV93 and RV532 as were recorded years ago by Narcisco Yepes or Pepe Romero, though I do have the same concertos more recently by Tom Finucane. Don't think I've heard Il gardinio armonico. Have they and the new release transcribed some concertos or trios to mandolin/lute/guitar to fill a CD?

Have a listen to Il giardino armonico...totally bonkers, but deliciously so! Try the opening to RV93!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vivaldi-Lute-Mandolin-Concertos-Antonio/dp/B000000SK4/sr=1-9/qid=1172278034/ref=sr_1_9/202-5913406-5145461?ie=UTF8&s=music

When I bought this (WH Smith's of all places back in 1993) it was the only time ever I've asked the assistant to play a CD; there were two discs of identical music - The Parley of Instruments (IIRC) and this one. I took both discs to the counter and they very kindly played the first movement of RV93 of each. Well, I knew within seconds of hearing the Italian group that this was the one I wanted, and I've loved Italian period groups in Vivaldi ever since...so much more 'oomph' for want of a better word!

Il Grande,

Yikes, I'm wondering what instruments they are playing in that clip  Cheesy

Quite weird the start of that RV93, yet the RV 532 is not unusual.

I get your point though, for years I've heard several versions of these and they tend to sound very similar, though I know I've heard fast (far too fast) versions, and the Finucane versions are slow to my ears - and he plays both mandolins I think which bothers me  Undecided

Just remembered I do have an album featuring Il giardino armonico, the Cecilia Bartoli's excellent Vivaldi album.

Unfortunately yes, Ron. I'm sure you're plotting to bankrupt me but thanks for that  Smiley Those Klemperer Beethoven discs from Testament 'recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall' have got me salivating already. It doesn't seem to specify when though so I'm off on a google-hunt. I may be some time....

I'm sorry GG, but not as much plotting to bankrupt folks as letting them know what's out there which might disappear quickly....

Things that might disappear quickly, like this....

Very pricey, but that first disc (of fourteen) is very, very tempting, and there's a few other things in there I'd quite like too... If the discs were available separately, number one would already be ordered....

I agree Il Grande Inquisitor, the new Gardiner Bach cantatas (Vol 22) are wonderful, mine also arrived a few days ago....I commend the discs to you all.

Indeed, I suggest you start collecting the entire set (see www.monteverdi.co.uk)

Until now I think Vol 8 has been the most satisfying, but this new release has got me reconsidering which is my fave.
