when i had the pleasure of meeting Ted Perry of Hyperion, I asked him if he'd met Klaus Heymann (Hyperion were, and probably still are, distributed by Select - a Klaus Heymann company).
He replied in the affirmative, not looking happy.
so i asked him what he was like to work with.
the reply was 'Like a one-man Panza division'...

I'm very grateful to Naxos for their Historical label, and their extensive series of music by English composers. Thanks to them almost everything Rawsthorne wrote is available,an unheard of situation  30 years ago. And Willow-Wood,Checkmate,HavergalBrian,etc. are just some of the things they have given us,besides rescuing Robert Craft's digital recordings of Stravinsky,Webern and Schoenberg from oblivion.

Having been constantly impecunious when my boys lived at home, I'm just as grateful for Naxos recordings of standard repertoire.

Looking through the Naxos catalogue there are so many composers and works unique to this label - which makes it great for the record collector - i often wonder if they make it pay with these more adventurous works especially with the cheap price  Huh

IIRC Naxos have a system of one-off fee (ie no royalties) to the artists for a fixed-length run per disc. It's less than the normal royalties amount, but all up front.
