Has anyone else been collecting the free CDs with the Daily Telegraph this week?

I don't normally buy the newspaper but I've been tempted. I missed Saturday's.

Sunday's (Elgar) was nothing special, rather pedestrian in fact.

Monday's was Holst's Planets with Sir Alexander Gibson. A good all round performance even though there was nothing in particular to distinguish it, although the balance sounded artificial at times. Someone's been busy in the mixing room.

Tuesday's is Delius with Barry Wordsworth and the best so far.

What is the history of these recordings? Have they been issued before?

I heard Saturday's disc, rather poor performances I thought, but for anyone new to music it was probably acceptable,a good selection of pieces....and at least they were in full.

Have heard the Saturday CD but haven't had time to explore the Sunday one yet.

I think the Gibson and Wordsworth collections are reissues, especially as Gibson died 12 years ago, but maybe someone else has more precise knowledge than me.

Has the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra had a vacancy freeze lately?  It sounds rather small in numbers here and also does on the otherwise delectable British Light Miniatures collection, released earlier this year.

What's on the Delius disc?

Ian.

What's on the Delius disc?

Oh, the usual suspects:

On Hearing the First Cuckold of Spring,
Brigg Fair Enough,
The Walk to the Paradise Garden Centre,
A Snog Before Sunrise,
Over the Top and Far and Away the Best in the Series of CDs so far.

Considering they were given away freely, these CDs (especially the later ones) were not at all bad. I enjoyed a performance of Parry's "I was glad" and Warlock's Capriole Suite, which was perhaps a little too jaunty and which missed some of the subtler moments but which was a welcome recording to keep.

As some of you are aware, I've been away again, returning only last night, so I missed all these issues: however, one sounds suspiciously like an early Chandos to me; there was a Gibson Planets in an early tranch of their CD releases which I thought I had (and I can see the cover quite clearly in my mind), but it's not on my shelves here, though it might be still in storage, or perhaps it was a demo disc at the Hi-fi shop. There was a roughly contemporaneous Walton First, Gibson/(R)SNO, which I do have, and that was recorded in 1983 and first released in 1984.
