This afternoon I saw a fair number of Prism CDs in a charity shop, the usual popular classics by Beethoven, Mozart, Dvorak etc but I was rather put off by the names of the orchestras/conductors/soloists, Georgian Simi Festival Orchestra for example and other names I couldn't attempt to recall. Probably from a huge set of CDs from Prism. Anyone know the quality of the orchestras and the quality of sound on those CDs?

I have all the works on better labels and vinyl so why am I considering snapping these up at 99p each  Roll Eyes Tongue Huh have I got some sort of obsession? Help me doctor, please.

They're of very variable quality, John, but if you must, I'm sure you'll find some treasures. There was a point in the early 90s when several companies were issuing cheap stuff from Eastern Europe: even Sony got in on the act briefly with a label called Digital Focus, which had several performances by the Georgian Festival Orchestra: I have a Petrushka and Apollo (though that's not by a Georgian Orchestra), a Firebird and Debussy Nocturnes and, most bizarrely of all, a Planets from this most unlikely of sources. The latter must have been a discovery for them, and it has something of a strange accent, though does point out just how indebted to Rimsky Holst was - nowhere more so than in Mercury.

Go for them, John: if there are any you really hate, give them back and let the charity make even more on them!
