Your Edinburgh CD shop recommendations will be warmly received pending imminent visit. Are there any second hand outlets?

There's an excellent independent classical shop - McAlister Matheson. A good range and friendly knowledgeable staff (though not especially cheap):

Of course there's also the standard Virgin (whose classical department is awful) and HMV (much better, but constantly shrinking). I'm afraid I can't help as far as second hand goes.

Blackwells (formally James Thin) on the Bridges is reasonable. A lot of the charity shops in Newington, Morningside and Stockbridge are good places for picking up wee gems if you are prepared to scrabble about. There is also a good independent classical shop opposite The Pear Tree pub (just next to Bristo Square) that is worth a look too.

There's a worthwhile all-music Oxfam in Stockbridge.

There certainly used to be, but didn't it close a couple of years ago?

Ah, has it? That's sad. I remember buying some Bruno Walter recordings there what only seems like a year ago, but I suppose it must be three or four. I only get back home to Edinburgh fairly infrequently these days, and time has a way of playing tricks on the memory in matters such as this  Smiley
