My local market has a stall which sells magazine 'returns' and production over-runs. The January BBC Music Magazine turned up there today in some quantity, each replete with the cover CD of Messiaen's Turangalila (Muraro, Tchamkerten, BBCNOW, Fischer. They cost £1 each. If anybody wants one, let me know a.s.a.p. and I will buy as many as are required/I am able, tomorrow. I would have to charge for postage, at cost, of course. If you don't want the magazine, and can do without the jewel case, I could sent the CD, in a plastic wallet, for the £1 plus the cost of a first or second class stamp (base rate). If you want the mag., I will have to check out what the postage cost would be.

Will do, Ollie. I already bought two copies, so unless someone else posts a request by morning, I will leave any further purchases until next Friday. The market only operates Fridays and Saturdays. Let me know if there are any aother recent BBCMM cover discs you might be after. They have quite a few on most of the past few months' issues, all at £1 each.

Bryn
I havn't looked at the Mag for a few years but if there are any recent (say within last 3 years) of  string quartet or Organ music (both were rare before & I guess even rarer now it moved more pop) I'll happily buy at £1 + p&p

If only, Francers. I will have a look, but it's a fair old while since anything of that description turned up on the stall.

They used to have quite a few chamber music cover disks, song recitals etc, usually by BBC Young Generation artists. But for the last couple of years it has been 90% works by the BBC orchestras, many pretty pedestrian offerings the Turangalila notwithstanding.

I wonder if Julian Lloyd Webber's tirade against the practice of full works on the cover disk had any influence ?

The BBCMM cover disc with Kavakos playing the Berg violin concerto is a truly wonderful thing. If that turns up at the stall, Bryn, you won't regret it. I think it might be my favourite recording of it.

Agreed Ollie and it is coupled with a most presentable Verklarte Nacht, Runnicles conducting. But sadly that was about five years ago !

Entirely agree with your assessment, Ollie. It up there with Suk and Ancerl. I got it about two months after it hit the doormats of subscribers. I have only ever missed one BBC MM cover disc I really wanted. That had the 'Bach' Tocatta BWV565, played on a baroque violin on the cover disc. I think the stall holder was on one of his frequent holidays when the excess copies were sold off to the likes of him.

I wonder why he's against them?  Lessee now, BBC Music Mag with disk - £4, budget labels - £5 to £6, JLW's labels - £10 to £14. It couldn't possibly be anything to do with the amount of royalties he receives, could it?  Shocked
