If you're missing the sort of light music that Brian Kay used to feature, may I warmly recommend a brand new Naxos CD of modern recordings of vintage light music items, many but not all of them from the world of radio and TV--hence the title, Radio TV Classics.  Don't worry if the list of tracks looks unfamiliar, for you'll know many of the pieces.   The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra does the honours, conducted by either Paul Murphy or Gavin Sutherland.  This cost me a mere fiver at HMV in Newcastle's Northumberland St.  Well worth every penny, so treat yourself!

Thanks for that.  Actually the correct title of the collection is British Light Miniatures, with the Radio/TV idea as a subtitle.

Ahh, some terrific nostalgia here - listening to Radio Newsreel at midnight on the World Service, ushered in by Imperial Echoes played by the RAF Central Band conducted by Wing Commander O'Donnell.  I think it was taken off in the late eighties and replaced by an electronic theme that was deemed to be more modern and relevant ....  Sad

Thank you very much, Ian. Smiley

Light music is such a British thing, it's really something the BBC should broadcast, I think.

I also miss Voices and I don't think the Radio 3 afternoons have become better after Roger's "improvements" to the schedule. Well, back to my CD player then...

Too late to tell you that David Mellor featured a programme of Eric Coates music this afternoon on ClassicFM. No Listen Again, so i guess it's gone, forever.

Besides that: CFM is unavailable for online listeners outside the UK.

Do I have to be sad about that? Roll Eyes

Thanks John.  I wish I'd known beforehand, as I could have recorded it.  I imagine it centred round some recent CDs of items conducted by Sir Adrian Boult and Barry Wordsworth.  I'll see if I can find the playlist on the CFM website.

Have now looked at the CFM playlists for last Sunday's David Mellor programme.  Most of the programme consisted of popular Eric Coates pieces, with the odd less familiar item thrown in.  For some reason, pieces by Constant Lambert and William Walton were also included.  The Coates items featured several orchestras and conductors but the core consisted of performances by Sir Adrian Boult and the New Philharmonia from 1976, recently reissued.

Lovely Archive Hour episode on Radio 4 about Mantovani yesterday evening.

I found a beautiful clip of Mantovani and his Orchestra playing Holiday for Strings on television:
