Just listening to their Shrove Tuesday performance. I really like the balance of this choir. Great introit. Psalm 104 would have been better with the Southwell chants of 20th Dec (including the Paul Hale embellishments which I enjoyed) but then this is my favourite Psalm since all of nature is there...........both small and great beasts........earthquakes and volcanoes......etc. The Stanford was stately but sung with appropriate enthusiasm. Evening Hymn again a great sing, a bit stodgy!. http://www.saintthomaschurch.org/Stream.html

Canterbury used to save the Balfour Gardiner for Shrove Tuesday, too, and very appropriate it is, IMHO. The richness of a pancake in choral terms, one might say, with its chromatically sliding harmonies having the sweet stickiness of maple syrup.
Do the correspondents of this board have any other food/choral analogies they could serve up?
Personally, I've always thought the choral music of Lennox Berkeley to be a kind of nouvelle cuisine. Something we're supposed to admire and respect, but which is rather mean and can leave a nasty taste in the mouth.
BWS to all, and bon appetit!

Yep, wasn't that Shrove Tuesday service a stunner. And the Reger voluntary was electrifying!
Allegri tonight.

Shrove Tuesday service certainly was superb.
But today's Allegri not up to their usual high standard - nothing to write home about, I'm afraid.

The Emperor suspected they were right. But he dared not stop and so on he walked, more proudly than ever. And his courtiers behind him held high the train... that wasn't there at all.

But the Byrd x 4 was OK.
Actually, I felt that their Allegri was at least as good as John's on this showing. Much nicer acourstic of course, and that must help. Sounded as if distribuiton of ashes was taking place while the Allegri was in motion - can't have been easy.
It'll be great to hear them live in Durham etc in July.

Hearing the Allegri again, it was as S-S says nothing out of the ordinary and compared poorly IMO with the Shrove Tuesday goodies with intonation and many background rumbles (maybe city street and underground train sounds). Thanks for pointing out that Reger composed the exciting organ voluntary, it ranks alongside the Mulet of a few weeks back.
Best wishes to all

We may need to clarify - on the webcast list for Ash Wed, St T's sang the Allegri TWICE. I was commneting on the late night (for us) one. Does that make any difference?

Soooo pleased that the St. Thomas' discussion made it across from the 'other' board - its defo worth keeping it current, such an excellent source of good quality on demand...

St T's are on tour after half term in New Orleans and Baton Rouge etc etc, and then do a St Matthew Passion for any flying to NYC.
July they are in UK.

Last few hours to listen to that glorious Shrove Tuesday service again!!!!!! I must have heard it half a dozen times now and still not tired of it.
Look forward to their visit in July when I hope to see them here in London at St P or WA.
Not sure which of the Allegri performances was on the webcast listen again function DracoM, but just thought something not quite right.

So good to hear the Moore service - I fell in love with it when I heard it for the first time in York in 1996 - its such an atmospheric piece for the men to sing. Nice too to hear the men only services getting regular airspace from St.Thomas', not something we were ever treated to on CE on a regular basis, but a weekly (if not twice weekly) event in most of our Cathedrals - it has a completely different quality to that of a 'full' choir evensong.

Just listened to the Sunday services sung (in the absence of St Thomas choir on tour) by the choir of Trinity on the Green Church, New Haven Connecticut. Not as strong a top line as St Thomas choir, but no less enjoyable, especially the Walmisley and the Palestrina.
