Well...it was 1935

Two rarities neither of which I've seen for several decades but got good vibes when I saw the titles.

               The Lost Moment (1947)   BBC2    10.35 hrs    Thursday, 4 Sept 2008

A film version of "The Aspern Papers" in which HJ (Henry James, presumably)) travels to Venice to recover the letters written by a famous poet to a woman, now 105.

A good cast: Robert Cummings, Agnes Moorhead, Susan Hayward and, most of all, a most stylish actor, Eduardo Ciannelli.

               The Locket (1946)     BBC2          10.35 hrs     Friday, 5 Sept 2008

An early post-war film noir.   I recall the strong imagery despite confusing flashbacks within flashbacks, involving a vivid femme fatale.   Unusual casting for Laraine Day but a young Robert Mitchum also appears.   Worth a shufti.

I'm not sure if it would pass the immigration test for a curiosity, but I have a soft spot for The Wrong Box (1966), largely because it is a showcase of all the best English talent at the time.

No, I'm not a complete idiot. I'm only a halfwit. In fact I'm actually a catfish.

Perhaps more of a hit and a miss oddity, Kittybriton, but I still watch it occasionally for Ralph Richardson's hilarious performance.   Remember the reaction of a fellow passenger on a long and interminable coach journey?   Starts by prompting him:  "D'y know how many times the word whip is used in the bible?"      At the end, he bids the exhausted passenger farewell: "Aw well, I do hope we meet again some day."!

The whole thing is crammed with wonderful quotes as far as I'm concerned. My family often get subjected to "I think we'll pay a call on... hm... yes,... I think we'll pay a call on..."
